Last night around 5:30 my wife says "You should go out to Jewel Island and see your friends."........ Ah, um, err, OK!;)

So in about 30 minutes I was on-board and under way. A typical spring day in Maine...

*Cold
*Fog
*Wind (this is good though)
*Rain
*Damp (thank god for a heating system)


Still beats being on-shore any day of the week....:D Most people would hate this weather, I love it....


What it looks like right now.. Just hanging on the hook puttering on "boat projects"..

Working from home today so seeing the same thing in Portland. We were at Jewel Friday and Saturday.

Is Avalanche still there? It is a custom built 54' tri that is on a circumnavigation.

I Remember

Main & guys,


I was born & raised in the Philadelphia area, or otherwise known as the Northeast Corridor.


I too remember the weather. Cloudy/rainy springs, falls & winters. One year we didn't get sunshine for 26 straight weeks in Philly. It was a record.

I remember reading that suicide rates were highest during these times. I'm not surprised as to why. As luck had it, I was offered a position in San Diego with a month in-between downtime.

I decided to visit mom who recently retired to Florida for a few weeks. She mentioned that having time on my hands, why not check out job scene here.


Long story short, I never made it to SD. When I read posts from you northern boaters & the weather you guys endure, it's no wonder you guys are a hearty breed.

Remember, keep flyin' sideways....

I'm of course jealous of the tropical climes... when it's winter up here, but I have to say (and maybe it's true for the other Northerners) that the spring and early summer around here are matchless for beauty and inspiration. Our summers can be stifling, with often light winds... but the Florida summer must be even more miserably hot, no?

Now, come November, I would happily pull up stakes for 5 or 6 months on Florida's Gulf coast. :) Are you hiring for those 6 months?

Your absolutely right on. There are seasonal times in spring & fall I remember as being great times & weather. Always hated the dog days of summer.

You are right about Florida type climates in summer as being brutal also.
The smart people are the ones with multiple homes in different climate zones. I'm so jealous......

To be honest I LIKE the seasons as I enjoy stuff like hiking without TICKS being a 100% issue :)

I also grew up outside Philly and I remember the hot humid summers there. In Maine we may get about a week of that. Florida would be like hell for me. I like the cold and embrace the seasons. When we finally shove off we are heading north and then east. People think we are crazy for not sailing to "paradise". Sorry but the caribbean is far from paradise for us.
