Anybody transit Kent Narrows recently? What depths have you seen? How's the shoaling?

Four years is a long time ago. Shoaling reported in last two years.

I draw 5.5 ft.

Anyone else been there more recently?

The northern approach to Kent Island Narrows was supposed to be dredged to 7' MLW beginning 1Nov1012. Dont know if that happened.

In past (2012) Notices to Mariners it seems that the northern approach has shoaled to ~3ft. at MLW. Plus, it has been reported that there is possibly some submerged 'rebar' or other sharp steel that has been the cause of keel damage on some boats. --from the "Waterway Guide".

Went through several times last season (2012). Bumbed on the north side in the river but did not ground. I can't remember the marker number but it was before the sharp turn to the west. We draw 5.5 feet. Have not talked to anyone yet that has gone through this spring.

I would stay away from Kent Narrows. I went through there last year and bumped a lot (and I only draw 4 ft). If you do try it, do it only at high tide. The dredging that was supposed to create a 7 ft channel starting last November "hit a snag" (read no money for this) and had not taken place as yet, I believe.

For 13 years I have believed that our boat draws 4.5 feet of water. On Thursday when we launched we showed 5 feet but as I backed from the launch area she wouldn't answer the helm. The depth sounder showed 4.0 to 4.3 feet. evidently soft mud because we were able to maneuver back and forth and managed the turn to the right. The floods of the last few years have delivered a heavy load of silt to the bay. Be careful everywhere.

The channel to the north has changed. It is marked, but stay in the middle of the markers. There is a post on the east side as you enter the narrows be sure not to get to close. Then when you get between the fuel docks stay to the east side of the channel, it has shoaled in the middle as you approach the bridge. Be very aware of the current as you near the drawbridge, with the flow has right of way. It can be very fast. On the southside be sure to line up the green posts. the water is very thin on the west side. Have fun, fair winds.
