146 motror shaft length? (Honda 2.3hp)

I have a 170 and recently purchased a Yamaha 2.5 HP motor with a 156" shaft. I have no problems with it except in very choppy waves in the Chesapeake Bay. Even then, the prop doesn't come out of the water. Enjoy.
Maybe I don't understand how the shaft length is determined. Is it from the top of the motor mount down to the center of the prop?
Here is the advice of 'Crazy' Dave Condon ( a long time Hunter dealer):
"As a former dealer and one who outsold the other dealers on the Hunter 170, I used the the Honda 2 hp short shaft. What many fail to know is when you are in the back, the boat water line is lowered due to added wieght. As a result the honda 2 hp is a good choice. When using the long shaft, extra caution to lifting it up when putting the boat on the trailer is suggested." I followed his advice and purchased the short shaft as I definitely keep the waterline at the rear well down and I launch and retrive in relatively shallow water. I am sure the long shaft would have caused problems.
