I had been pining over our friend Stu’s new stereo last year because he had wired remotes at the helm and in the cockpit (he has a power boat with a raised helm deck). Our stereo had a remote, but it was infra-red and you had to be within sight of the stereo for it to work.

I was looking at the Fusion with the iPod/iPhone dock. But that’s a $500 unit plus about a $100 for the remote. Not exactly a budget friendly item. I was looking at this unit during the boat show and a salesman from West Marine told me I should check out their new radio. It comes with two remotes; one is infra-red but the other is radio frequency. That means it doesn’t need line of sight and it was supposed to have a 30 foot range. I watched West Marine for it to go on sale and picked up the radio for $169.

Here are the installed pictures.

RF module.

Wiring bus for speakers and power.

The first unit had a broken LCD screen. The cell in the middle of the screen didn’t display correctly. So I brought just the face plate back to West Marine and we tried it on their display unit. Same thing. So they swapped out the face plate and when I put that on it worked perfect.

It is iPhone/iPod compatible. Using the USB cord you can charge and control your iPhone. You can even play Pandora and podcasts over the system from your iPhone. The RF remote only does source, fast forward, rewind, volume and mute. The IR remote can actually search your iPhone and display on the LCD screen. So your playlists are fully playable, as is selecting by artist, genera, album, etc.

The RF remote is great. It easily worked at the helm and even worked about 10-15 feet up the dock. It’s water proof and based on the range, I could be swimming or hanging on a float behind the boat and be able to work the remote.

The installation is a little over kill as far as the bus bar. I suppose I could have just used butt connectors like the PO did, but after all of the electrical system work it just didn’t feel right. So that was about another $20 on the installation.

Sunday night we did have a little problem. While watching TV every now and then there is a cross over in signals. The radio would turn on while trying to change the TV channel. I will have to do some more reasearch on this.

Cross posted on my blog.

curious, why didn't you install the head unit where the OEM unit was (switch panel)? I have been thinking about upgrading mine as well so I can use an AUX input for my phone.

This is where the PO had the stereo. I didn't add the black box, that was already there.

I had thought about moving it to above the electical panel but that area is pretty full right now. See the photo below.

If yours is above the panel, you could install this in the same place.

Well, I guess this must be new radio month.

My new radio will arrive Wed by UPS, from my friends at Defender.

Now, if I could just find out where all those wires are for and where they go:confused::confused::confused::confused:.

The person who did this wiring also did the drip loop on the mast wiring I think.....

I installed the same unit last spring. It has worked well for me, zero complaints so far except about a week after installing I lost all volume from the head unit, and even at full volume you could only barely hear sound. WM replaced it no questions asked, and let me keep the extra RF remote, so now I have two remotes :)

I made the mistake of buying a stereo with a USB, line in, IPod connector, CD Player and no one that knows how to use it! Some day I will learn that bigger or more isn't better and these things don't to have everything or maybe not.

I like technology myself. I can store so much more music on a 30GB iPod than I could ever carry in CDs. When space is limited, these things can help a lot.

What I have from the stereo to the speakers is standard speaker wire (clear coating, non-tinned wire). The PO didn't even use heat shrink connectors. The outside speakers are connected with wire nuts! So I can't help you there.

If I was to install a new stereo today it would have Bluetooth streaming capability. Unfortunately I bought my Kenwood Excelon just before Bluetooth streaming was an option. With Bluetooth streaming your phone, iPad etc. become the remote...

When working on customers boats I stream Spotify over broadband, or use the offline mode, and send the signal to my Jambox speaker via Bluetooth. The phone is usually in my pocket or nearby so I just use it as my remote...

Spotify:
For those who don't have, use or have ever heard of Spotify it is literally the best thing to happen to music since having ears!!! Forget Pandora, iTunes or any of the other antiquated forms of getting your music, Spotify is leaps and bounds ahead of everything and the music is literally unlimited. The $10.00/mo is SOOOOOOOOO worth it for anyone who actually likes music. I have discovered more new musing in the last year than in the 30 years prior, and I have a HUGE music collection.... I honestly don't know how I ever lived without it or how antiquated formats like Satellite radio, Pandora, iTunes or the others will even survive unless they equal or better what Spotify is doing.. My iPods (5 or 6 of them plus my wife has an iPhone) are literally collecting dust. They've just been made obsolete....:D

Jambox:

For those with small boats these little Bluetooth speakers are quite amazing, also quite durable. A lot easier than installing a fixed mount stereo. While working on a 70 footer we use a large Jambox and it sounded incredible for the size of the speaker and the size of the boat. For a small 17-27 footer it would be a great addition. They can also charge off 12V and the internal rechargeable batteries last for hours and hours at a decent volume.. They can be used plugged in or streamed via Bluetooth...
