Mooring in Stamford Harbor (Stamford, CT)

Hi All,

Has anyone been successful in getting a private, permanent mooring placed in Stamford Harbor?

No problem with getting the permit, but whenever I contact the two approved marine service outfits and tell them I need a permanent mooring and not a lunch hook, I seem to be getting the run-around (I mean they say they sent the quote for placing the mooring by email, or they'll call me in a few hours, but I never receive it or I just never hear from them again....)

Is there something I'm not getting with this process?

Have you tried going to their office and meet qith them.

I think all the moorings on the East side of the harbor are maintained through SYC, not sure about the new ones out on the west side. Pretty lonely area, long dinghy ride, and a fair amount of noise and activity from that commercial barge mooring. I don't think I would want to go there.

Won't be as cheap as the mooring, but much easier to get to, We have space over at Seaview, two sailboats are leaving this year, one sold, the other moving. You need to be able to put up with Vinney though, which is fine with me, but he rubs some people the wrong way.

FourPoints--how deep is the approach and in the marina? I draw a little over 5 feet. Westcott Cove I know is pretty shallow

peterbud--no, I haven't. I would have thought that phone and email would have been enough to just get an estimate. Maybe they just have so much work already they don't really want any new business. Who knows...

it's about 5.5' at low tide, there are a few other boats in there that draw 5', it's skinny, but no-one has ran aground yet.

Its definitely under consideration, but 4" between my keel and the bottom makes me pucker up big time

The guy next to me is a 67' Bertram sport fisherman, his props are 5' deep, says while he sets off every depth alarm on the boat when coming/going at low tide, he doesn't have any actual problems. Also Halloween yacht club is right next to us, and they have many 5' draft boats that come and go all the time.

It makes me pucker a bit too when my alarms are going off, but there are plenty of sailboats and large power boats constantly coming and going, none seem to have problems.

A lot of depth concern are dependant on the type of bottom soft mud is better than gravel or rocks.

Correct, we have nothing but soft mud bottoms in the Stamford marinas

I just read reviews on activecaptain.com where vessels with drafts of over 5 1/2 feet have no problems getting in and out of there. Charts show 4 to 4.5 feet, but it seems the channel has been recently dredged, so it might be a real option.

What is the rate per foot for the season? I'll definitely call and see about getting a slip there

You have to talk to the dock master Vinney, he will quote out discounts based on how full he is, and how much he likes you, but it is not any more than brewers, the docks are solid, and parking is way better.
