Who lives in Hawaii? I need knowledge.

Hey All

I need the help of you Hawaii sailors.

My father lives on Molokai and he is fighting a battle with cancer. So far he looks like he will beat it but he is 73 years old so I won't lie...I'm worried. I'm going to visit him in two weeks and want to take him out for a day sail, or maybe a crossing to Maui for an overnight in a marina and back.

Growing up he had always talked to me about a trip down the Mississippi in a pontoon boat but the Cat in the Cradle thing happened the way it normally does and that never happened.

Can any of you recommend a trustworthy charter company in that area? Someone you know or have used? It would be just the two of us so it does not need to be a large boat. A Ranger 29 or something similar would be perfect.

Some might say its risky taking a sickly or frail elderly person out like that, but I say GO FOR IT. I would rather die having one last thrill than lay in some lonely bed and die, and I know my Dad felt that way.

We were down near key West in 2006, and saw Dans High Sky airplane rides. Dad might have been 83 and had a bad knee, but he sure wanted to go for a ride. Never saw him move so fast as climbing into the back seat of that Cessna. He talked about that flight right to the end, and always wore one of the T shirts we bought, and in fact, was wearing one of those T-shirts the day he checked out.

As long as YOU feel he is physically able, and he wants to do it, then do it.

And if he's a Vet, you may want to contact the VA about arranging an honor flight to Washinton to see the war memorials. Thats the one thing I wish I had done for my Dad, but we ran out of days.

I Moved from There too Long ago to Know Anyone Still

But a good place to start would be the Hawaii Yacht Club or the Waikiki Yacht Club. The Kanehohe Yacht Club also now that I think of it. I never sailed to Molokai but passed it quite a few times sailing to Lahaina.

sigh :cry: , I used to live in a wild fun house overlooking Kaneohe Bay ... now a marina and yacht club are there..... then it was just a quiet view of Chinaman's hat.
Wish I knew then ......

I don't know how strong he is right now. He says he is feeling well. He was diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer. It is not a single tumor but a bunch of "seeds" so they injected each seed with a radioactive somethingornother. He starts radiation is a few weeks and expects to feel bad then. So I'm trying to get a visit in beforehand.

He also had a kidney removed in June so he has had a tough year. But!!! he has always been healthy and active and says he feels good now. Even a flying scott would be a fun day out.... since I'm not picky... I expect I'll find something ....

I agree, if he is at all interested, go for it. Have a great time and enjoy the time together. I hope he is up to it, please let us know how it goes.

And if he isnt able, then just sit on the beach and have a few beers, and talk about the things you always put off.

My Mom and Dad divorced after 43 years. I wont go into details but it ended badly. My Dad was legally blind. Not BLIND, just couldn't see well enough to drive, and was kind of feeble. Without Mom he was going to go into a high rise. At 67 years old I felt that was BS and talked him into the two of us buying a run down house/hobby farm out in BFE Minnesota. The place had this yard light that was on from dusk to dawn and had no switch. You couldnt even see the stars it was so bright and felt like you were on display. So one night after a few beers I shot it out. Man, what a difference. Then Dad and I sat outside drinking beers and BS'ing and talked about things neither one of us had ever shared. That was 20 years ago, and he remembered that night to his dying day. And I will as well. Good times are good times my friend.

Sailing between islands in the Hawaiian chain can be a pretty tough sail and I would think quite unpleasant (and dangerous) for most 73 year old folks. The seas can be very large and dangerous, having crossed several thousand miles of unobstructed water only to be squeezed through a small passage between the islands. Same with the wind in the channels.
Molokai to Maui is no "a trip down the Mississippi in a pontoon boat"! This is serious sailing and can be a very tough trip, seas of 12 to 15 feet are not unusual.
When I lived and sailed there, there were no small inter-island cruise ships as nothing under about 300 feet was at all comfortable, generally speaking, and it wasn't economical to run something larger.

Anchor, that is such a perfect love story, I am so impressed with your actually doing what most of us consider and then dismiss as unrealistic! You give me pause, thank you for sharing this.

I've been watching this thread for a couple of days. It always slows me down a tad, and makes me think of my dad, who is no longer around. I would probably give everything I own for one more day with him. So, do something. Anything.
The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention..

Don't Be Discouraged

It has been a while but as I remember Lanai and the west side of Maui are in the lee of Molokai. Additionally the swells moderate tremendouslly in the summer months. The big swells come in the winter.

There are lot's of boats that do whale watching tours that maybe an option. I am sure there is a way for you to make it happen keep investigating.

Take any and all opportunities, they won't be there when you turn around.

Take what Capta has written to heart. Sailing in the Hawai'ian Islands can be difficult. It is not the BVI's and while Hawai'i is beautiful and one would think sailing there is a dream come true, it can be nasty. I'd let your dad be involved in the decision to sail. This idea of yours might not be what he wants.

I appreciate your input and I really do hear you. It is reasonable to assume the son is the wild card in this equation but in this duo I'm the voice of reason. My dad can be crazy sometimes.

Two boats ago I had a 1973 POS Coronado 25 that had no electronics. No head. The cabin top was damaged. The 7.5 merc 2-stroke outboard was probably original with the boat. All of the standing rigging was original and my Dad wanted us to sail it to Hawaii. I told him he was crazy and he said ... "I see boats smaller than this in Hawaii all the time". :eek:

Yeah well... people get lucky;)


Anyway I think that I've decided on a simple day sail near shore on something less than 30 ft followed the next day by a drive up a mountain pass.:)

If all else fails you can allways take a captained 2 hour sail aboard America II out of Lahaina [Maui] Its a 1987 Americas cup boat. I believe it was a syndicate boat that was used in the run up to the cup in Australia. Its a bit touristy [takes about 16 people or so] but makes for a fun ride if the wind is up.
