That is standard. I have never removed the pin but I suspect the other end is in behind the piece which covers the "grove" in the center. I think that piece is removable, but cant remember exactly how- some one else done it?

I pulled mine several years back, thinking that it would give me access to the wiring .. turns out there is a backing plate inside the mast .. you can see a little way up but almost no further access.. I it might have been a ball detent pin .. I don't remember much but I kinda remember turning and pulling to get it out. or maybe, as Richard says, the separator plate came up and rotated aft ?? disengaging from a groove in the pin.. Dunno... I rember being surprised at how it came off, but can't remember exactly..sorry..

I believe that this pin is a detent position. Push in and twist either fore or aft then pull out. Given the distance between the pin and the plate shown in your posted photo, I think this method is more than likely the case here.

Standard. I've pulled mine by just inserting a large flat blade screwdriver between the head and the plate. Release tension on the halyards before you do so. It is just a push pull pin. You just need to re-align the sheave and re-insert pin to re-install. Suggest you cut a window in the mast as in pictures. Makes reaching those wires for connect and disconnect while stepping or un-stepping mast much safer than working with your hands under a suspended mast. Good luck

Thanks Claude. I had not tried but I have the confidence now. I bought a cover plate from Rig Rite with the purpose of creating an access hole.

OK, detent ball on the end of the pulley shaft made sense so I pulled and rotated.
Look what I found. I heard the cotter fall out.

Never seen anything like that on all the 34s I've been on. Pix of the pin suggest a modification by PO (hole for cutter pin way too close to end of pin to be manufactured like that) and installed while mast was down as you would need to insert your hand inside the mast. Lucky for you the cutter pin was not bent completely and fell off ! Using a rod of the same size as the pin you can probably check the integrity of the inside hole. If the hole where the pin is inserted is OK diameter wise, I would replace that pin with one with a detent ball if I was you. My boat is still on the hard under tarp with the mast down but within a couple of weeks I should be able to make a picture looking at inside the mast and post it for you.

Thanks for the reply. The inside hole looks OK and I have found a detent ball with 2 1/2 inches of useable lenth. It has a threaded end, so I can end it with a nut.

I wonder how far in you can push it and how much would stick out creating a hazard for lines, ankles, etc. If you cannot find proper length, I would suggest inserting your 2 1/2" until you hear and feel the detent ball clear on the other side of the hole, then I would mark the threads where it comes out of the mast. Get an A-corn nut of same size, screw it on the end and measure depth required for it to bottom on the threads. Mark the threads and remove the nut. Measure distance from end of threads to mark.
Then measure same distance from mark outside of mast towards end of threads and cut. Re-thread the A-corn. You will wind up with a pin that will fit against the mast and whose detent ball will clear the hole inside. Good luck
