Rusty Keel

Hi All,
I am just about to take ownership of a Beneteau 423 (2006). The keel has some rust that I think I should take care of prior to launching.

Any recommendations on sealing and protecting this once I get the rust off? Also I was planning on using a grinder / sander to get the rust down to bare metal.

Are you planing on just doing that spot, of the whole keel?

I 'd do the whole keel,l once and for all.

I've have great success with POR-15. Do a good job and your done pretty much forever.

Others might say a good exoxy barrier paint.

A common B maintenance item. Wire brush to bare metal on a two-day window of dry +50 degree weather. IMMEDIATELY coat with epoxy barrier coat, I use Interprotect 2000e from Interlux. Two coats. It is important to get the metal sealed before any rust can start - that means no dew or condensation.

+1 on doing the whole keel. Easiest way is to have someone soda blast it to bear metal and immediately coat with a primer.

I've heard good things about POR. I used interlux 2000 total of 5 coats.

For those who've used POR-15, which color would you recommend? I'm leaning towards gray, but they imply nearly any color would work on any application.

Interlux 2000e has worked very well for me. I did 3 or 4 coats on a couple of rusted areas on the keel of my 2008 B46 last spring. "Hot coaled" the 1st coat of Interlux ACT bottom paint onto the final barrier coat. No bonding or adhesion issues at all.

When the boat was hauled last fall it was still perfect. Going to do another small spot in another location next week if the weather is cooperative.

If you want to do the minimum work to protect the keel, I would wire brush the rust down to bare metal, rinse it with acetone, and then paint it with straight epoxy where bare and then cover that with the regular bottom paint. I don't see why this wouldn't work. The rest of the keel may never rust and the rusting you have probably is due to hitting something. In two years you can re-evaluate and if needed, sodablast and do the full interprotect. Good luck.

Depends on the reason the iron is exposed. If its caused by hitting or crazing something then I agree. However if it's because of the epoxy coating is blistering - different story. Easiest thing to do is take a putty knife and go aground the break. The putty knife will pop all of the loose stuff off - you then have a better idea of the scope of repair. FYI the areas can be patched with thickened epoxy (to reduce sag). Somewhat like a drywall repair except tougher to sand.

When I bought my First 375 it was much worse then that. I used a grinder and 60 grit sandpaper to take down the really bad spots but anything that had goodsolid base on it I left. I put 5 coats of interprotect 2000 and I've been 6 years smooth and rust-free.
