Hello,

I am wondering where I can buy a replacement cable for a 22' Venure. I need to replace the winch every few years, but this time I noticed that the cable is frayed, so I would like to replace it. I would like to get one that I know will hold the weight of the centerboard. If I can't buy the "original" cable, I would love to know the specifications for the cable.

I appreciate all suggestions.

I change mine every 2 years , easy , any boat store will have the wire just tell them it is for the winch and the keel weight approx 500 lbs ,

cable is softer than stays cables

Just switched mine over to Dyneema rope. It's stronger than wire, no special tools to make an eye splice, and no cable "hum".

I just looked up the Amsteel (Dyneema) on Defender Marine. Great idea. 5/32" is only $.53/ft. and has a 4000# rating. I am going to get some for my Lewis Winch as well. I am lucky enough to have a local rigging supply manufacturer nearby. They made me two winch cables and wouldn't take any money!! CUSCUS how do you find the time? I am dying to get the cover off my boat so I can start tinkering myself!!

I used 3/16” Amsteel, with a Brummel splice (New England Ropes website for instructions) around a sailmaker’s thimble (the one that’s a solid thimble with no ears to catch the line). This is also what I used to make my lifelines (blue for everything).

I just got the cable, keel bolt and keel lock bolt from Blue Water for my Mac25. I know it's just stock equipment, but, one phone call and I had it all.

Have you had any issues with it yet? Do you have any chafing with the rope where it goes through the hull? Did you connect it to the keel with a bolt and washers? Sorry for all the questions, I plan on doing this in a few days. thanks

No chafing issues thus far. This stuff is tough, its hard to cut, even with a sharp knife. It's connected to the keel in the exact same manner as the cable. A bolt through the thimble. Make sure you use a sailmakers thimble. I did put a 1/2 bolt across my keel trunk so the cable would have something to rub on (the original rub piece at the top was really worn). This picture is when I still was using wire rope (cable).

thanks. I just made a locking brummel around my 3/16 solid sailmakers thimble. This was the first time I have spliced rope and it turned out perfect. Will be putting this on the keel this weekend hopefully!
