thru hull plug

I am restoring a 24' sloop. I removed the old toilet and would like to plug up the thru hulls. Rather than grind and fiberglass it closed, is there a plug fitting that would replace the original thru hull? That would be quick and effective it it's available.....steve

Install a thru-hull like normal and cap it with a bronze pipe cap? They sell the pipe caps. . .maybe go a step further and install a groco flanged base like you normally would and just cap it. I think it would be quicker and less effort than grinding and glassing the hole in. . .and leaves the option of putting a ball valve on in the future if you need too. . .

Where would I find a bronze cap for a bronze thru-hull fitting? It is not available through West Marine or Defender or local hardware stores. That is the route I would like to take instead of a grinding/epoxy project. I have 4 holes to cap

ACE Hardware or a good plumbing store. Just get the right threads.

West Marine has some Bronze caps. . .in particular mine was 1 1/4". I used Groco Thru-Hulls because they have a combo thread allowing use of NPT caps.

This solution is kind of pricey..... might find a marelon substitute will be more cost effective.

I have been reading about Marelon fittings and I'm impressed. Do they make a cap for their thru-hulls or is there a compatible part I can buy?

All Marelon fittings are NPS threads, contrary to their website and catalog. Any cap and plug you're going to find around locally or on the web will probably be NPT.

However, since there is no real structural at play regarding caps and plugs the NPT threads should work fine.

A company near you in Portsmouth RI, Ocean Link (www.oceanlinkinc.com), has plastic plumbing fittings including caps and plugs, made by a company called Bee Valve. They're schedule 80, 30% glass-filled polypropylene and exceed the ABYC materials standard.
