Just acquired out first sailboat (1981 Catlaina 30 tall rig) and need to update our ac/dc distribution panal into one. Looking at powering fridge, lights, music while under sail.

Would like opinions on specif panals/inverters/etc that you have upgraded and are pleased with. I know this is pretty vague but just getting my feet wet. Thanks.

Seaward Products made your old panel (as well as the cockpit panel) and have updates. Other sources that folks have used is Blue Sea panels.

Don't worry about the distrubtion panel. What size alternator and what is the amp/hour rating of your house batteries, what kind ( flooded, gel ) and charger.
Then determine your loads to see if what your exsisting equipment will be adequate.

I have replaced two panels; one on my Cat 30 and one on My Islander 40; with Blue Sea panels. Both are nice panels that gave me exactly what I wanted when I got them in and have since worked great.

One word of warning though, they are a royal PITA to install. I swear Blue Sea must actually try to make these hard to install. You have an odd shape cut out with VERY exacting and close tolerances. I ended up in both cases mounting the panels to 1/8 inch trim plywood in order to be able to cover mistakes and get them where there were no gaps. I then made the base cutout larger and mounted the ply over that.

Next time I will try Paneltronics. Cheaper; and almost as flexible as Blue Sea.

Ehh, I would worry a lil about a 30+ year old distribution panel that was built rather cheaply to begin with. Many original Catalina fuse panels that I have disassembled (I've owned 3 Catalinas) have had serious corrosion problems. Corrosion adds significant resistance, inducing lots of extra heat buildup that can melt cheap wiring & cause fires. Cheap electrical apparatus was not unique to Catalina. Electrical upgrades & repalcement of the original panels is a good investment, & the old panels will not be missed.

Plus getting rid of glassed fused circuits for modern breaker controlled switches is a must for reliability. Once you install a new 12 volt & 110 panel, then usually the original wiring gets yanked & replaced as well as the significant corrosion & rats nest of old wiring is usually apparent.

My original panels were also replaced with Blue Sea Brand, which are flexible in what circuits you want to add. But I agree that the overlap of the panels edge to where they screw mount to the board is exacting. There is only about 3/8" overlap. Measure more then twice, & hopefully only cut once.
ps. Installing extra 12 volt socket receptacles really comes in handy for powering portable 12 volt devices.

Blue Sea panels all the way. Well made. Prewired. Logical with good diagrams.

I completely rewired Haleakula last year and replaced the 30 year old original C&C Panels
This Blue Sea has 15 DC and 8 AC breakers. Also added a Victorn Battery Monitor.

I placed th panel in so it can fold down on hinges for easy acccess behind it. Also the teak Piece can fold down on hinges by removing the knob. Makes for easy access when needed.

I have placed trim piece between the two teak pieces since I took the picture.

Chef2sail: I like your hinged electrical panel setup. Looks classy & I bet its easy to access your wiring.

I second Chef on Blue Sea panels. Very high quality, robustly built, everything is tin plated to resist corrosion, LED back lighting, excellent labeling system, great pricing, and some of the best tech support in the industry. Blue Sea is a first class operation.

Thanks, not as neat as Maine Sail, but did ok for an amatuer. Got the hinge idea from the Bristols a number of other boats we looked at last year. Both the individual Blue Sea Panel and the teak are hinges as eventually I may need to put other instruments into that.

Just had a phone conversation with them about a compatibility question and I can attest to their quick response and wealth of knowledge.

Do you really want a AC/DC Panel? Why not go with a DC Panel at control panel then a basic AC fuse box in galley. Then put your inverter under your companion way? And have on off on inverter ac power for shore. DC Panel with no worries of AC getting in way.

Another source is Catalina Direct. Most of their items are designed to be slip in replacement.

I recently installed this panel. I purchased it from Ken Roy (in parts) down here at the Catalina plant in Largo FL. His phone number is 727-544-6681 not certain on availability? Worth a shot! BOAT PANEL.jpg
