3/16" packing for a 1" shaft. I don't know if anything has changed but that was the standard.

Be sure to cut the ends at 45 degrees or so and offset the ring cuts.

Steve's correct-it's 3/16". The Gore works really well, just installed it again on Escape last year

One more question...........I just installed the lewmar folding wheel.I have the Ray st 4000 auto pilot. The wheel will not latch onto the protruding rod from the pedestal to engage the st 4000.any solutions for that issue.

I also use the newer stuff. But I do not worry about the size... I just us the thinest thickness size I believe its about 1/16 th maybe less then an 1/8 th inch can't remember. I just start wrapping and feeding the packing into the stuffing box till I can just get the threads of the nut to catch..... Then I tighten hand tight.... Run the prop a little then tighten a little more to just stop any leaks while it's at rest. Check it every once in while to make sure shaft is not getting hot.... Sometimes it drips a little when running sometimes not. If it starts to drip to much I just give the nut a little extra turn to stop the leak at the dock ..... After a few years or so.... When I start to run out of thread I just back off the nut and add a little more.
Pretty simple really no hassles.... Frankly I have never understood why people keep having so much trouble and making such a big deal about this shaft stuffing box thing it's really quite simple!

ONECOOLAIR,

So you never pick out the old stuff, you just keep adding new, and that works?

That's strange-I did exactly the same thing and the 4000 engages the post just fine. Make sure the wheel and pilot are on all the way. I don't think they make a dished wheel-mine's flat. If it only misses by a little, you could shim out the rod at the pedastel end-or order a new rod - it's cut to length at install
