Hi guys,

Thought this would have been asked and answered before, but I can't find it, so here goes:

How do you replace the wiring in the H31 with the mast up? I've got the boat in the water, and suspect that based on some of the other wiring that my masthead light and anchor light may need new wiring. I've got to get back up the mast to verify with a voltmeter, but in the meantime I figured I'd ask the question so I can start thinking and planning.

Thanks!

Don't know if that would be very easy but assuming you can use the existing wires to pull the new ones, you may be able to start at the mast head. Secure the new wire to the old and try pulling it down to the deck level (if you do not have an opening at the base of the mast you may need to pull from below. Then you will need to do the same for the steaming light.

These wires should have a drip loop in them to help with water intrusion into the compression post.

Personally I would drop the stick and do the wiring on the ground. It is a good time to replace the mast sheaves too.

That's another part of the question I'm interested in, how do you get at the wires from inside the cabin? Definitely don't have a wire exit above the deck.

I may get to dropping the mast, but hoped to avoid any expenses I reasonably can. The rest of the project is taking a good chunk of change as it is :)

I owned a 1984 Hunter 31. Typically, there is a connector on top of the cabin roof at the base of the mast...sorry about that. The wires run inside the coach roof within the rib that acts as a stiffener for the compression post and provides an anchor for the head bulkhead off the starboard side. They are buried until they comeout behind the gallery aft bulkhead.

Either unstep the mast, which I highly recommend...a rig of that age will need thorough inspection anyway. Or build a tabernacle and lift the mast to a height above the coach roof to allow you to work, once you have run your new wire.....Good luck.

Boz, I was thinking of this project too. What year is your 31? The delrin sheaves on my mast are pretty dicey and probably all need replacing. Would folks reco going back with Delrin or aluminium? Where does the mast wiring exit the mast in the cabin? Does it come out the bottom of the compression post in the shower pan area or above the cabin ceiling?

These sheaves have lasted for almost 30 years. I don't know if it is worth the expense of using alum. Check out the price difference, that may help you decide.

Thanks, exactly what I need to know. Bummer about the connector, that leaves me no way to just pull wires.
