A 82' modern sailing yacht went aground last night on the Pacific Coast just a few miles south of the Golden Gate. Crews refused Coast Guard assistance. While watching/listening to the morning TV news, the owner of the yacht learns it isn't resting at its berth in Sausalito. The thieves didn't navigate very well.

Wow!

Here's a link to a San Francisco TV station video report.

I was out on SF Bay yesterday. The NWS forecast 7-15 kts. Actual was 20-30kts even at the entrance to the Sausalito harbor. And heavy dense fog was streaming from the ocean through the Golden Gate and over the surrounding hills. Possible this prevented the thieves from navigating visually.

If they hadn't have run aground, maybe they would have made it to Mexico before owner figured it out. How often do you check your boat?

Spot would be handy.

All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by. Sadly that star seems to have been the Taco Bell on Linda Mar beach.

This looks like the boat-http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.charterworld.com/images/yachts/Darling%2520Profile.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.charterworld.com/index.html?sub%3Dyacht-charter%26charter%3Dsydarling-1508&h=432&w=648&sz=89&tbnid=I_zpVI-joGvkYM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=135&zoom=1&usg=__I_vCXByY4CfxbbLgSlPPqfVLhfs=&docid=telGwoqnMaVJKM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=uAM2UeepOIio0AHeuIGYCg&sqi=2&ved=0CEAQ9QEwAg&dur=390 .

Being a charter yacht, maybe there are some more angles to this case?

The article mentions that it hadn't been available for charter in a couple years, and that site even says that it may not actually be available.

Im a long way from there, but it smells like there is something not right about the whole thing.... it leaves one to wonder if the unauthorized "crew" may have accepted a down payment of pizza and beer to make the boat disappear.... with the promise of a tropical cruise thrown in as a bonus.....

it really is getting tougher to find dependable help these days no matter how good the perks are:D

he saw it on the news on tv and said was his boat and went from there-what a way to learn your boat isnt where it is spozed to be, but what a negligent gent for not paying attention to such a big lack of investment.....

If I needed to make a fast getaway I think I'd steal something faster than a sailboat. Anyway, I liked the footage of the authorities transferring the woman from the yacht to the jet ski. It looks like they were about out of patience by that point.

My suspicion: The thieves knew the owner, had been around the boat, and knew that the owner was rarely at the boat. It seems they knew how to get into the boat and get it started, etc. Their plan, I suspect, was to take the boat out for a "joy ride" and bring it back without the owner even knowing that it had been gone. That's why all they had aboard in the way of provisions was pizza and beer.

TV said boat was unlocked, keys for engine aboard. boat was not that bad of shape considering. (per the repair yard)

Boats are surprisingly easy to steal... Compared to cars, -nothing has changed in the last 30 years on boat ingnitions.

This is a real problem in the Bahamas, go fast with large OB's.... a key token is really needed.
