Furled 323 jib circumference

I'm making a sleeve from a sailrite kit for my stock 116% jib. Unfortunately my boat is winterized so the jib is not on it. I am hoping onoe of you has one rigged and could provide me the furled sail circumference at the clew which should be the 'fatest' part of the furled sail. Candidly any boat inthis relative size range would give me a good idea.

Hi Bill,

I'm getting about 17 1/2" going around the clew and over the ring.

Probably some variation here, depending on how tightly wound it is. Perhaps Ron can provide some confirmation.

By the way, 18.5 was with Sunbrella leech sun panels. Keep me/us posted. I have the material laying on the floor, but life gets in the way.

Using your inputs and one from a friend in NC that has a Bavaria 32 that measured 17.5" also with a Sunbrella cover, I settled on 17" to start. I only have the sail material as I had Sailcare remove the stock Dacron UV band and adhesive before running it through their cleaning/re-resining process.

I cut the Sunbrella material to a width of 23", as Sailrite recommends taking the circumference + 6 inches to allow for the double thickness at the zipper which uses up about 1-1/2" total material, with the additional for clearance. 17" circ. equates to a 5.4" dia. and a finished sleeve of 21.5" would yield about 6.8" dia. This leaves about 3/4" clearance at the sails widest part. While I don't want it to be too tight as I want some air circulation and ease of zipping up etc, I also don't want it so loose as to flap excessively in a stiff breeze. I'm also considering adding 1" SS D-rings on alternate sides at about a 4' spacing with a 'cinch' line weaving back and forth around the forward side. This would allow me to pull on it enough to take in some of the slack up top where the furled sail dia. is much less. Somewhat of a modification of the ATN furled cover concept.

What I've decided to do is make the sleeve with everything complete except for one side of the zipper. This way I will have the majority of the work done, can actually wrap it around the sail and make the final decision on finished circumference before attaching the second side of the zipper. This will also allow me to precisely position the vertical location of the opening for the clew/sheets.

I'll keep you posted and add a few pictures as this progresses. Again, thanks for your help.

I'd suggest using a number of zippers instead. If you have one long one and lose some teeth or whatever, you'd have to replace the whole shebang. AND, maybe you'd have the sheets in there also?

Good thought, I do plan on having two at this point meeting at the clew, but your thought on possibly having two ~ 18' long ones vs. one 36' long on the part above the clew is a good one. Thanks
