zero speed over water

I am getting zero reading on the SOW gauge. I have removed impellor a number of times to clean and still zero. I notice that when I do remove impellor and spin it with my finger, a reading does appear on gauge. But in the water, zero. Yesterday, I was doing over 7k on SOG gauge; zero on SOW as it has been all season. Any ideas? thank you, Bob Pilgrim

Have had similar problems...

I have had problems like this also. Getting the reading when you spin it is a plus, as you know the guage and wiring work. I have had a wire work loose on the back of the guage at the helm. Be sure your are getting the impeller installed in the proper direction. Mine actually has an arrow on the top to align it. Other causes could be marine growth, scum, etc around the impeller on the hull. Try a long handled brush, go for a swim, or get it cleaned. Our marina usually has a special on mid summer quick haul and powerwash and relaunch to remove marine growth to minimize problems like this. Good luck!

Alignment

The only obvious thing I could think of that makes sense is to make double sure your impeller is facing in the right direction. You should see an arrow on the top of the unit that needs to be pointing forward. Other then that I don't have a clue why this would be happening.

Lubricant / Should freewheel....

When ever I've cleaned mine the reason it had stopped working was seaweed had started growing under the impeller. When you flick the wheel with your finger it should free wheel a bit before stopping. If it doesn't you still have somthing between the wheel and the axle. I always shoot some non-corosive lubricant in there to loosen up what ever may still be in there.

Speed transducer

Bert, We keep our 290 in Sausalito and it seems we have to clean it prior to every sail, and this boat goes out several times per week. What we find in the impeller are these little crawly creatures. They clog the thing up very quickly. It is no bog deal to pop it out, clean it off and then go, except for the crawly creatures that wind up on my hand and arms. My questions are...what are these things, and is there anything I can squirt on the impeller that will both discourage them and not hurt the opeartion of the impeller. Amazingly resilient and fast nestors these little buggers!! We just spent a week up in the delta, and apparently they do not reside in that area as we had no problems all week. Dan Jonas!

You may want to check around, I believe that there is some special paint that you can paint tranducers with. Don't know if it is any more toxic than regular old bottom paint, but worth checking. If not, try getting a dab of bottom paint from a local yard and paint it and see if that works.

Same Problem - Try Desitin

I have had the same problem from time to time. It was caused by what I politely call "sea moss". I wrote an inquiry here back several weeks ago on the need to frequently clean the transducer. Responses included a suggestion for using the diaper rash ointment - Desitin. I bought a tube, and periodically bruch the wheel with Desitin. It seems to work!

Air bubble

I had a similar problem on the Cal 25 I owned before my 280. Sometimes during launching an air bubble builds around the impellor and it stops the impellor from turning. I would loosen the cap that holds the impellor assembly in place until water would start coming out around the threads, burbing it if you will. The knot log would work fine afterwards.
