Anybody here following Zac Sunderland? It's gotten to be a dailly thing for me, perhaps because he's just between my two boy's ages.

Nearing the end of a very credibly conducted circumnavigation, Interpid just fell off a wave and the bulkhead that holds the chainplates parted lifting the deck 3 inches. He's running off for shore with effective mast staying on one side only and a hurricane brewing in the region. It's going to be interesting.

You'll probably also want to read Mike Perham's blog and Jessica Watson's blog. Of the three, I'm rooting for Jessica and Zac more than Mike...
I haven't been following either of the other two although I may find Jessica's eventual career as a model more interesting than the sailing. The idea of sailing around the world without seeing anything and learning about it seems just plumb crazy. Mike's boat is too high tech and his whole thing seems just too set up to grab me. Zac is sailing the kind of boat I would do the trip in and is my son's age so I can identify. He's taken the time to learn something about the world he's been sailing through and meet the people. I usually only follow one of these voyages at a time.

It looks like Zac (in port BTW) is headed for a career as a Christian motivational speaker upon his return at which point I will immediately lose interest.

LOL... Yes, she's a very pretty young girl

Mike's attempt, as a whole, seems very contrived. His father paid two professional sailors to help prep the boat, paid for the boat, and paid for a professionial sailor to "coach" or prep Mike... All of this really leads me to ask, how much of this trip is really Mike's idea, and how much is being pushed on him by his father.

Zac also purchased the boat himself, prepped it himself, and has done most of what he has accomplished thus far without assistance, especially paid professional assistance, AFAICT, and that makes his attempt a bit more worthy and interesting IMHO. He isn't merely throwing money at the trip to make it happen, the way Mike and Mike's father are.

That makes two of us... you'd think that he'd find something a bit more interesting to do with his life after doing this.

Wow.

I find in rather arrogant to judge another person on his career choice. It is his/her life. Or is it just a christian thing?

I will venture a guess that the preceding comments were based on the fact that this young man has gained a lifetime of experience by sailing around the world and you would think he would go into a marine related trade.

That was my take at least.

Maybe Roger has heard about Jesus and just doesn't care. I would loose interest following a sailor that went into the medical profession. I don't think Roger has judged him by his profession. He is just not interested in it. In fact that was exactly his words.

However, Saildog, you think he should have a more interesting career? Interesting to who, You?

The name rings a bell. Something from my four years of bible classes? Maybe my father, the former president of the American Society of Christian Ethics, mentioned him while I was growing up. I'll get back to you on that.

No future career choice or plans would effect my interest in the remainder of this impressive young man's voyage but I may not be checking his web site daily after he ties up in Marina Del Ray.
