Wellington 47 center cockpit cutter Bradenton, Florida
Hi Peggy,

We just bought a 47' Wellington sloop in great condition and would like to upgrade the head for living aboard. Currently there are two Groco model K manual toilets. We'll leave the forward unit as the backup. We would like to upgrade the head in the master cabin for convenience and ease of use and maintenance.

The boat will spend much of the time at dock near the mouth of the Manatee River in Bradenton, Florida, in a marina with a good flow so the water is exchanged frequently. I imagine the water is brackish but we also will cruise in salt water locally on the weekends and vacations in the Keys and Bahamas. We will have plenty of fresh water available at the dock and have up to 500 gallons in tanks on board.

I'm thinking an electric toilet (Marine Elegance?) with raw water intake and an ElectroScan unit would make for the most convenient installation. I'm guessing this would require a salt feed unit also. As a liveaboard, this unit would get frequent use.

If this is enough information, what would you recommend?

Raritan Elegance a good choice...

But I'd go with the pressurized fresh water version and a PuraSan instead of the Electro Scan.

I dunno why people feel they should keep a manual toilet as a "backup"...'cuz electric toilets require far less maintenance and have a much lower failure rate than manual toilets. And if you lose power, an inability to flush an electric toilet is the least of your worries...'cuz you won't have an nav equipment, lights, communication equipment, or bilge pumps...but you WILL still have a bucket and line to toss it overboard to "flush it!"

So unless budget constraints require delaying it, I'd replace the guest toilet with a Raritan SeaEra.

We prob'ly should discuss how you plan to plumb everything, 'cuz you're gonna have a use a holding tank in the Keys and also there are a few shortsighted marinas that require it.. Send me an email or PM (I'm in all the sbo.com owner directories) and I'll give you a phone number.
