Insurance in Baltimore for H33

Wow. It seems from this discussion that I'm paying way to much for the insurance on my '79 H33 ($1750/year). Please keep the recommendations coming.

Thank you Gene ... NMU is by far the best

Here is an update to my last update: (4) BOATUS: After a couple of days of discussion with an underwriter (and her supervisor), their best premium for $25,000 agreed value is $1,308. That is "only" twice as expensive as I was paying, which is better than INAMAR. Note that BOATUS has added a $1,000 deductable in the event of a total loss due to a named storm. INAMAR's deductable is $2,500. (5) ALLSTATE: They will not insure a 1979 boat. (6) NATIONAL MARINE UNDERWRITERS: A BIG thanks to Gene for this recommendation. For exactly the same coverage as my current policy, their premium would be $511.00, which is $120. CHEAPER than my current policy. They do require a survey, but I had one completed in June. And like my current policy, they do not add a deductable for named storms. National Marine Underwriters looks like the best bet. Has anyone filed a claim with them? Cheers, Rob

I believe there is a bigger deductable

I may be wrong, but I think the deductable does go up in named storms. You might ask again. One thing I will say, you will be able to tell from their policy. It's not long, it's not filled with small print, and it's in very plain english. I do know that they cover liveaboards with no penalties, which may be of interest to some in this group. Their application asks if you live aboard, which scared me when I started to live aboard. But when I asked, they told me the only reason they asked was because liveaboards usually had more equipment on board than the standard policy covered and they wanted to make sure you had the option to add extra coverage to cover it.

Insurance Woes

I have Boat US insurance on my 99' Hunter 340. I lost a sail and had some minor other damage during Isabel last year. Boat US was fantastic in their response and prompt payout. Having said that my insurance went up by about 50% this year. Sounds like its time to shop around. Thanks to all for the info in this thread.

NMU Claim

Rob, I think you're right to ask for claim experiences. You never know how good an insurance co. is till something happens. (It's not just about price.) I filed a claim three years ago when my transporter dropped the mast. NMU was great. I could have gone through the tranporter's insurance (this gent thought he could bend the mast back!) When I told NMU about this, they suggested I let them step in to protect me. They sent a surveyor out. He was prompt, courteous, and made sure that I got everything I needed for a new mast and anything else. I still have two other boats insured with them. My experiences have all been great. NMU has done a good job for me, but then I've never strayed from NMU so it's tough to compare. As Gene says, their policies are an easy read. They are very helpful in clarifying any questions you might have. Increase your deductible, decrease your premium. I suggest you consider the Agreed Value and Waiver of Depreciation on these policies to make sure you have enough but not too much coverage. Good Luck with whomever you choose.

Thanks West (and again Gene)

I'm glad to hear that claims with NMU were handled so well. As they assure me that they have no additional deductable for named storms (and as they do not penalize liveaboards), I'm going to go with them. Let me add my thanks to hunterowners.com. These forums are a wonderful resource for ideas, mutual comiseration, and they can even save you money.;). Cheers, Rob
