After sailing down to Grand Isle over the holidays, I returned to New Orleans to discover that West Marine is dropping The St. Paul Co. as its insurance carrier. Included within my notice of dropped coverage (effective in a month) was a new insurance policy from INAMAR. Comparable coverage with INAMAR would cost me $1,731 per year as opposed to $638 per year with The St. Paul! I think INAMAR's premium is outrageous. I completed the online form for a rate quote for United Marine Underwriters. The reply I received was that my boat was too old for them to insure. Here is my question: Can anyone recommend an insurance carrier for a 1979 H33 (under)valuded @ $25,000 that will NOT cost an arm and a leg? Thanks.

USAA

USAA serves military and former military. They are still providing very reasonable coverage if you are eligible. However, I understand that the neglect of many boat owners in preparing for this seasons hurricanes has shocked the insurance companies who are raising their rates accordingly. Not the problem for those of us on inland lakes. I hope you are successful. David Lady Lillie

Insurance Woes

I've had limited experience, but BoatU.S. seems to have reasonable rates and insures my 1976 Hunter 25 for about $10.00 per foot.

I applied for ins. with Boat us and they required

a full expensive survey for our hunter 78 27. I was only looking for $5000 worth of ins. I have put liability on my home owners for the boat. But...instead of casualty, I replace the pennant every year with new line and have a ton of heavy chain and long scope. In the fall when hurricanes threaten seriously, I have the boat pulled and call it a season. New England has a short season anyway.

Progressive

I'm in New Orleans with a 1983 H30. I just bought it last month and am paying about $550. And that's for a book value replacement cost, one sea tow, and a $250 deductible. Not bad. Their number is 800 Progressive.

Robert: Same thing happened to me

Robert: the same thing happened to me about 2 months ago. I switched to USAA, where I had the rest of my insurance. had to get a new survey done ($330). Irony is I had switched to West Marine/St. Paul years ago because USAA raised their rates! You probably will have to get a new survey if you switch companies. Still, survey plus one year premium less than $1000, so better than the INAMAR rate...guess WM doesn't really want our business anymore. How did your trip to Grand Isle go - did you go down Mississippi or out MRGO?

State Farm

A friend at the marina suggested that I call his State Farm agent. My premium went down from $600. to $400. and I added $8000. to the value of the boat. I had INAMAR and they kept raising the rates every year. And Boat U.S. wanted a survey on my 1979 H37C. Their quote was not much better than INAMAR. Coverage with INAMAR was for a partial year(boat had to come out) and stopped at the lower Hudson river(we are in Lake Erie). The State Farm policy covers the boat to Florida and within 30 miles of the Atlantic coast. Go figure.

I second the State Farm recommendation

They saved us an awful lot of money - 1200 plus!. You can save even more if you lump car, homeowners, etc because of the multiline discount. I like the fact that we deal with a local person - our neighbor is our agent. Deductables are lower - ours in $100 and it doesn't change if we sail "out of the area" nor are we limited only certain sections of the Chesapeake. BoatUS insisted on certain sections and a $300 surcharge anytime we cruised outside of the designated zone - all for $1800 a year! We were given credit for sailing school and for a clean driving record. Finally, we were able to add a great deal more coverage for a whole lot less. Check them out on line. Our bottom line for a 2005 H36 is $490.00 for the year.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. The trip down to Grand Isle was pretty exciting. We went down the industrial canal through the locks, then down the Mississippi about 4 mi. to the Algers alt. lock (Harvey locks are closed until the 10th). We then motorsailed to the Barataria waterway strait down. The channel markers near Grand Isle leave something to be desired (and the chanel depth went as low as 3.5 feet). Anyway, since I been down here my girlfriend's father and I have created a new bowsprite and a clubfoot jib setup. I'll post some photos in the projects forum. Cheers, Rob.

Insurance

Just One More hat inthe ring.. We have Allstate, cars/home Boat....I can't say enough about the service we got out of them when we wacked the rudder this past May...The adjustor that came up, actually a surveyour, Geezzee, this guy acted and sounded like he was working for US and not the Insurance co..Now, this might be a local thing, but it can't hurt to check them out...The bill came Saturday for our renewal, $180 bucks, no increase from last yr, even with a $3700 payout by them.... Good luck in your Quest! 73 Ed S/V MYST

Here is what I have found so far:

Based on your recommendations (thanks), here is what I have discovered: (1) USAA: I'm ineligible -- I'm not on active duty I was discharged in 1988. (2) PROGRESSIVE: I received what I thought was an excellent quote of $404, only to discover that the quote was for liability only. They do not provide comprehensive on a new policy for a 1979 boat. (3) STATE FARM: I have my auto insurance with STATE FARM. They do not provide online quotes for boats. A couple of months ago I went to my agent and received a quote of around $1,800. *yks (4) BOATUS: I completed the online form but have not yet received their quote. (5) ALLSTATE: I'm waiting on the agent to call me back. Marcy: I'd be interested in your list. Cheers, Rob.

try national marine underwriters

Give National Marine Underwriters a call. I've been happy with them and their rates are the best I've found. 1-800-boatins. covers all inland waters and, I think, 200 miles offshore (maybe 300, can't recall). My '81 is about $700 a year for $60k agreed value. There are some options on deductables that can help. Email me if I can answer anything else. austinsailor at cs.com

Not all insurance is created equal !!!!

I am not an insurance expert, but I know that there is a lot of difference in policies. Most of the lower priced automotive insurance companies offer replacement cost coverage. This is going to pay you something much less that you are going to be able to find a comparable boat on the open market. You really need to find "agreed upon value" and insure it for something that is what would be a true replacemnet cost. Shop around, ask questions and determine what is going to be best for your situation. We also have BoatUS and found them very cost effective. The difference is we are on the West Coast and are only paying less than $300/yr with an agreed value of $35,000. I doubt that the insurance company would pay us $50k even if we had it valued as such!

BIG Vote for Progressive!!

SEABEE TO USMC... I've had a lightning strike and then a break-in theft while soft aground for 4-days following IVAN. PROGRESSIVE took excellent care of me both times. When I discovered additional electrical damage, they asked for a statement from the frig guy and paid immediatly. No hassles. I understand they had quite a few claims down in Florida this year!! DON'T SHOP ONLINE FOR INSURANCE!! BOATUS and others want to make a quick buck that way. Call for a quote. g'd luck.
