Aloha,

Saw the Yeti Goal Zero power supply and was wondering if anyone was able to basically power the AC side of their boat by connecting it to the shore power outlet?

Mahalo,

Chris

I suppose you could…for a little while.

But at $6,000 for the largest one, I don’t think I would. And then you still have to charge it somewhere.

Essentially just a large Lithium battery bank. Why not just install the batteries?

What are you looking to power with your AC circuit? That will help you decide if the capacity of the Yeti up to the task and if it’s better than just a bigger DC battery bank.

It looks like the Yeti is a (slightly more expensive) competitor to Jackary. We had a discussion of the pros and cons of that approach at Solar Generator versus 100Wh battery Prices.

I was just thinking of powering the water heater with it, it would also be nice to have a portable unit like that so I could take it out of the boat and use it for other applications. I am based out of Marina Del Rey, so I would only need to use the AC power for the water heater sporadically over say 3 days at Catalina on a mooring. So I don't think installing a generator would be necessary.

If you’re just looking to make some hot water I’d just run the engine for a little while. It doesn’t take too long to heat the water that way, and the water stays hot long enough that you don’t need to do it too often.

A much cheaper and more useful portable generater would also heat the water, but really, just heat it up by running the main engine a bit.
3 days in Catalina are not worth the added expense and equipment.

I dont think my engine heats water at all. The water heater runs off the AC bus--so even if the engine is running I cannot turn the heater on. The water is also not run through the engine with any type of heat exchanger that I'm aware of. So I think the only way to run my water heater would be via AC power, so I would either need to install a generator, inverter, or get one of these things and plug it into the shore power receptacle to provide AC power to the AC bus on the boat.

I also have a Honda portable generator, which is fine but the battery option seems better to me: quiet, no gasoline, no CO to worry about.

Many boats, including my good old 1988 O’Day 322 with a Yanmar 2GM20F have a water heater with a heating circuit that runs the engine coolant through the water heater when the engine is running. That provides some hot water even when away from shore power. My water heater also heats water when hooked to shore power via a 110v heating element.

The heater switch on your panel only turns on a AC heating element when plugged into AC. The engine when warm automatically will heat the water.
Look at your heater, are there 2 coolant lines running from the engine to it?
First thing to check. Maybe they're not hooked up?
It should heat the water and stay warm a day or so easily.
Problem solved.
Look for me on Windpilot h410 when over there, usually at the West end, next weekend even.

Hey Greg, appreciate the help, I'll check it out. So look at the water heater and see if any lines run back to the engine?

You should see this. It's the coolant lines going into the heater heat exchanger inside the heater box.
Where are you? In MDR?

Greg,

I'm in Pier 44 near the Trader Joes in MDR, what about you? When I go down to my boat next week I'm going to take a look at the heater and see whats going on. Come to think about it I've never tried the hot water after running the engine so I have no idea.

You're in my old stomping ground from the 80s 90s, oh those days were good on Bali by the hotel, used to be a Don the beachcomber and another place on Mindanao that was good. I'm next to mothers beach now on palawan.
Anyhow try it, maybe it already works just fine, it should.
Before the yeti, just make sure you already have some solar up, this way you'll have plenty of power for lights, radio, tv even shorts microwave runs without running any fossil fuel for power for your time in Catalina.
I never plug into the dock anymore, saves my zinks/anodes from the stray electric in the marina also.
