yet more questions from a newbie!

Hello again,

I have another couple of questions to ask, BTW thanks
for the advice already received!

I am considering buying a vega and keeping her on a
large inland waterway, the river Shannon and the Lough
Derg, here in Ireland.

Now I realise that this a very much a off shore boat,
but offshore in east Ireland where I live is terribly
boring and featureless, not to mention very expensive
(especially in Dublin, where I live). The other
sailing grounds of the south or west coast are just a
bit too far to travel, so the Shannon is located in
the centre of the country and has _many_ ports and
harbours with good facilities and it's tideless,
saltless and dotted with pubs ;)

But I have a couple of reservations about the vega...

Just how difficult is she to get in and out of a
harbour/marina with the long keel and prop aft of the
rudder?

After I buy a boat, how much (ball park figure?) will
I have to spend in order to get her up to comfortable
and safe level? I would hopefully get a 1977 or later
model.

How easy/difficult is it to take the mast down and can
this be done without a crane?

I really appreciate the advice and help you all give
and I must say this is one of the best and friendliest
boating lists online :)

Fair sailing!

Paal,

I have Vega #827 on Lake Eufaula on the Alabama/Georgia line (200 miles
inland). I put up the mast with out a crane and with two friends (one a
100 pound female) only using the halyard of an adjacent boat. It was not
difficult, but lay the wires out first, and don't let them get tangled.

As for getting in and out of harbor, not a problem, the boat almost turns
on a dime once way is on. The only tricky thing is going astern, as
others on the list will attest to.

The solution is TAKE IT SLOW.......... hot dogging with this boat is out
of the question. As for getting it up to shape, if you are willing to do
the work yourself, not much $$$$ (or pounds in your case) is required.
The boat is even trailerable...............

Hope this helps..........

Hi Paal

look in the files section for the zip file -

plans for Walt Shevitski's mast boot/tabernacle and crutch

I keep my Vega on the West coast in Galway bay, the sailing is
splendid. I'd say it's worth the extra miles and on a day like today
the Pins are something to see.

I don't know if this is stating the obvious but the VAGB site usually
has a couple of Vegas for sale in the brokerage section.

Hope you're fortunate enough to own a Vega.Good luck

HI there new Vega owner. Out of salt Vega might cost 15,000 U.S.$ and then to put the navs on might cost another $3,ooo. But with the Vega your ahead of the game.
