My First Mate and I have *finally* decided to get with the program and put the American Flag on the stern of our '99 H260 where I suppose God and Chapman's intended it to be. So now we're having trouble finding the right flag staff and holder. Plus, we're not really sure where on the stern we want to put it.

If we put it on the center stern rail it will get in the way of the grill. If we put it on the back of the starboard stern rail, or port for that matter, it will get in the way when someone is sitting on the stern rail seat. And we also need to know the diameter of the railing. I always thought it was 1" but the one we just bought from West Marine said it will work on a 1" rail if we take the plastic filler out. Even with it out the insert the rail is too big.

I'd love to see pictures and find out how and where you mounted yours.

Thanks!

I put the flag on a starboard spreader pully with a lanyard and then it isn't in the way. Flying our flag is real important to me as I served 10 yrs US Navy & 11 yrs US Army.

I'd check with Chapmans on the propriety of that location for the flag.

You are correct Jackdaw. I thought that with no guest flag being flown and US flag was only one it could be flown at the yardarm. Obviously it is the leech or stern placement for our flag. Thanks, I was about to rig a lanyard on this new one too! Chief

From Yachting Protocol Guidelines of the Southern California Yachting Association;

Section V: Flag Etiquette and Display Afloat

1. Flag of the Country---The number one position of honor on a vessel is aft. This dates back to Roman and pre-Roman days when the aft deck of a vessel was reserved for the statues of gods and goddesses known as "Pupae", hence the poop deck. ... This tradition has carried forward over the years as the National Ensigns are always hoisted aft. The National Ensign, with minor exceptions, must never be hoisted at a forestay, spreader, or main mast.

I get all this. I'm trying to find the right pole and mount for the stern of my H260.

Yeah, now I have to find my stern rail flag pole! Chief
When you do, please me know where and how you mount it. And its brand and size and anything else that might help. Thanks!

With the mast crutch removed, you have ideal mounting points for a flag pole. The flag pole just drops down into the same holes the crutch uses. I made a very large flag pole using copper pipe.

There is no reason to go as extream as I did to have a reasonable sized US Ensign on your stern.

My "under sail' US Ensign is attached to the leech of my main.

Dave: why didn't you just go ahead and get a garrison flag? Chief (Navy ET1 & Army CW3)

"Garrison"? Is that French?

I call it "#1 Battle Ensign". I have three other sizes depending on my mood and the weather.

Note the commissioning pennant at the mast head.

protocol is 1 inch for every foot of boat length on the horizontal plane of the flag...but i prefer a 24" one on my boat its 30 ft long

i also had a survey done on here a while back and found out that the starboard side if the stern is correct to mount it ...i also prefer a teak staff in a chrome bronze socket

Now we're cooking with peanut oil. Sometimes the obvious is not obvious to me. Thanks, cephius (Dave)!

Kermit, a little late as you already mounted your flag nicely but here is the flag on my O'day stern rail with a full moon in the background.
