I keep seeing the Chene anchor either advertised or in stores. It is cheap and supposedly works on a 2:1 rode with no chain. Claims that that are either outrageously false or unbelievably true! ;) Does anyone have any first hand or anecdotal experience with them? The link is to the 31' to 36' model, at $40. on Amazon.

No experience but (m)

I'd be real concerned about the finish. Zinc plating rarely stands up to the rigors that ground tackle is subject to.

short rode?

It reminds me of the other night. 10 boats were seeking shelter behind a small island,it seemed that everyone had a differant amount of rode out. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't 7 to 1 the amount you want unless it's stormy? Maybe everyone else was using this new type of anchor. At 2 to 1 I would think it would be confusing for others even if the anchor could hold. Jack

Obvious problem

The picture you provided is the first I have seen a Chene anchor. My immediate reaction is that I would never anchor overnight on this anchor alone. If the wind or tide reverse themselves and your boat swivels around the other way the ring will pull down the shank to the crown and the anchor will pull out backwards. In fact they advertise that it is easy to pull out because of that. This type of anchor (with a slotted shank) can be used if you anchor bow and stern so the boat does not reverse its pull, however, I am highly skeptical about the other claims - the ability of the flukes to swivel 45 degees is fine if you have soft mud to anchor in, can you restict the angle of the flukes for other types of bottoms etc etc. I think this is a daytime anchor for use in soft bottoms by fishermen who are always keeping watch.

It looks like the first

try at making a danforth style. I don't think That I would tie a dog to one.

There's probably a law

against tying your dog to your anchor, lol!

How about using the dog as anchor?

tie a line to him and throw a stick and say go get it boy :) I miss my dogs. Just kidding...I didn't use them as anchor...I gave them away when I moved on board.

Franklin, get another dog!

A nice Portuguese water dog would be a good choice, if you are around enough. I knew a big Chesapeake Bay retriever that could swim out to the row boat on the farm pond grab the painter and tow the boat back to shore.

Get what you pay for ...or pay out

Sounds close to the 1.1 to 1 stink-potter anchoring technique. They let out just enough to get it wet. Bob Always Something

Danforth and sea weed

The problem with Danforth's is that they can get hung up in sea weed, and the anchor portrayed looks like a modified danforth.

Hey Chris

I know where you sail and in the bay you need a good anchor like a Danforth,Bruce,CQR and when the wind change's direction which it always does around here you'll want peace of mind on whats holding you to the bottom. One night last summer while on the hook at the beach and my friends rafted up to either side of me the wind came around out of the north and was blowing 15-20 my Fortress pulled and then reset keeping all of us from breaking loose, this all happened at about 2AM, we untied the rafted boats and had them set their own anchors. I didn't expect the wind change that night but hey you never know, had that anchor failed I think one out of three might of went aground.*yks I've since upgraded to a Bruce after lots of research on these forums about anchors. Hey you will have to join us this summer on one of our raft ups BTW that anchor looks a little cheesy

Had one simular

It came with a boat I bought. Pretty much junk I wouldn't use one for more than a lunch hook on a small boat. My primary anchor on my Pearson 323 is a 33# Bruce knockoff called the Claw. I've been using it for about two years with no problems. I bought the claw after we awakened at about 4am in the middle of the bay. A storm had came through and when the wind shifted 180 degrees my plow broke out and skidded across the grass without resetting. The large Danforth also broke out and speared a large conch that stopped it from resetting. So far the claw has always reset itself after a wind shift or tide change. and I now usually only set one anchor. The claw from defender pretty cheap about 60 bucks if I remember correctly much cheaper than a bruce but the bruce seems to be a better quality anchor.
