yellowed windows on a dodger

I have a fairly long sail (36 NM) coming up in a couple weeks when I move my boat to a new marina. Judging by the recent weather, it's going to be a fairly cold trip and I'd like to install the old dodger that came with my boat. The trouble is the windows are yellowed and hard to see through. Does anyone know of a way to remove this? I plan to replace the dodger (but can't afford to right now) so I don't want spend much money on it but I would really like to get this one more use out of it. Paul 1974 Catalina 27

Clean or replace...

You have two choices, as I did recently... You can try and clean them with something - I heard that paste car wax is good. Or you can get an upholsterer to replace them. I chose the later and it was relativley cheap compared to a new dodger (little over $100) and he even restiched all the seams and fixed the zipper.

To get you by.

Paul: To get you by you can try some of the cleaners for plastic windows. You should be able to find something like Meguires. You want something to clean them and then a polish. Depending on the condition they may or may not be suitable. If all else fails, you can get them replaced. If your dodger is in good shape, you may want to consider having the windows made up so they can be zipped in, instead of sewing to the actual dodger.

Thanks All

I try the paste wax and cleaning for now. The fabric is too UV damaged to save but the frame is good. I'll get it rebuilt this summer but the budget doesn't allow it right now. Paul

Dodger windows

Paul; If you haven't done your windows yet, try SeaPower. It's a cleaner/wax with a mild abrasive that will clean up and polish your plastic windows. Might take a bit of elbow grease, but will be worth it. I think it works better than Mequiures and the other purpose-built window cleaners, but that's JMHO.

Dodger Windows

Paul, 3M made a cleaner / Restorer type wax that may work. I use Pledge furniture polish on mine and they look great. But they're new, so they have never yellowed. Regards, Chris
