Yawl Question

I guess the advantage of waiting for insurance settlements after a hurricane is that I have more time to confuse myself about what 'new to me' boat i want and I also have the priviledge of continueing to make insurance payments for a boat that will be eventually totalled out. Anyway, I thought i about had it narrowed down to Hunter 37 Cutter or an Allied 36 Ketch. Now enter the Yawl as another possible prospect. I know nothing about yawls except that they are more or less a sloop with a tail feather, with some of the features of both sloops and Ketch's. Does anyone here have any working knowledge of the pros and cons of a yawl? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Tony B

Yawl mystery

The merits of sloops, cutters and ketch's are all widely known. However, no one knows what a yawl is for ; )

Hmm....

"The yawl is often confused with the ketch, which also has two masts with the main mast foremost. The official difference is that a ketch has the mizzen mast forward of the rudder post whereas the mizzen on a yawl is aft of the rudder post. In practice, on a ketch the principal purpose of the mizzen mast is to help propel the vessel, while on a yawl it is mainly used for the purposes of trim and balance. In consequence the mizzen sail of a yawl tends to be smaller, and the mainsail larger, when compared to a ketch of similar size. The mainsail of a yawl will be similar in size to that of a similarly sized and proportioned sloop. Also, on a ketch, other sails may be set from the mizzen mast such as staysails and even occasionally a second spinnaker, but these are seldom set from the mizzen of a yawl. The yawl was originally developed as a rig for commercial fishing boats. In its heyday, the rig was particularly popular with single-handed sailors, such as circumnavigators Joshua Slocum and Francis Chichester. This was largely due to the remarkable ability of a yawl to be trimmed to follow a compass course accurately despite minor wind shifts. Modern self-steering and navigation aids have made this less important, and the yawl has generally fallen out of favor." Man am I smart :) Copied from Winkopedia...

Yawl, y'all

I do know that the most nearly perfect boat I ever sailed on was a yawl, a Hinckley Bermuda 40. A classic, though an older design. As I understood it from the captain of that boat, the value of the yawl was that he could fiddle with more sail combinations to come up with the right balance. With the two masts he also had a mizzen stays'l for additional sail area in the right conditions. In very strong wind he could use a reefed genoa and the mizzen and no main and achieve very nice balanc without being overpowered. And it looked great.

Ahem....excuse me, but...

Any REAL born and bred southerner knows that there is no singular of y'all (note correct spelling)...that it's ONLY plural, used only when talking to or about at least two people. So if you were to ask, "are y'all buying a yawl?" it would be of a couple or family, not just one person. Just thought all y'all should know that. :)

weather vane

About the only thing that the mizzen on a Yawl is good for is a weather vane or steadying sail when at anchor. Oh wait, it is also usefull as a place to put your radar dome (on the mizzen mast). Other than that there is no real good reason for it. I would guess that is why no one makes them any longer.

sorry! but it's all y'all...

Down in these parts a person is y'all, many persons are all y'all. Why is that? Because Suthrins all have multi-personalities, some up north try and cure such things by having you lie down on expensive sofas and talking about your folks, but they're wrong to do that. You're never short of company with lots of different folks dancing about in your head. 'Sides it keeps all the carpetbaggers off balance, 'Y'all sold that Bible to Bubba, not me and he ain't around right now, so shoo! ;) So y'all is you, and all you you's are all y'all.

Ya'lls Yawl

It's a good thing they dont have a "you's guys" rig or all ya'll would confuse the heck out of me. 'Me' being singular, with a split personality could possibly be a "me's guys' Im sure glad i asked, now that i have it straight. LMAO.

Yawl for steering

I read an article one time that a yawl can be steered by manipulating the mizzenboom - a plus if you had rudder/steering system problems. I seem to remember the author was a minimalist cruiser, and may not have had an engine on is boat. BTW - I agree with Peggy, Y'all is plural.

Singular-plural makes no difference.

If suthrin's had any rules of grammar...they would talk the king's english... but they say things like "Y'all cain't tell me nutin" , or "I'm fixin' to git hitched". All I know is when I get off the plane in Arkansas I immediatley lose my California accent and the nasal twang takes over. Later, dude, I got to git on back to the house.

Peggie: hi y'all!!

Peggie, I grew up in North Carolina, and have lived in Georgia,South Carolina,Virginia and Maryland. In all of the above locations, y'all is both singular and plural, unlike the Northern "youse guys", which is strictly plural.

Shoo

Hey Didereaux, Thanks for reminding me of the word "Shoo". I love it... I can't wait to use it again. "So Shoo now y'all". It's very retro-down home-hip.

Only among the unejikated :)

No well bred and propa'ly educated south'n lady or gentleman would EVA' use y'all in the singula', suh. :) You should know, suh, that you are NOT arguing with a Yankee. I was born in AL and come from deep rooted AL stock who very well may have been the inspiration for the term "steel magnolias." The older aunts never ask about my work...it's just not a subject they consider proper to discuss in polite company! :) As for you, suh...North Carolina may have been part of the Confederacy, but is too far north to be part of the deep south...and as for GA, Atlanta doesn't count...the population is made up of so many Yankee transplants that a "native" is considered anyone who's been there more than 6 months...someone who was actually born there is real rarity (I was there for 26 years, btw).

How about this?

If a rig has the mizzen directly over the rudder post is it a yetch?? This might be a good name as there could be some disturbing structural problems with this arrangement.

Yawl Come Back Now

Hey Tony, Last I heard you were gonna build yer own yawl? Alotta hits here these folks seem to folla youse around like yer the pied-piper. This guy, Liam is right, the mizzen is a vane mostly; old salts called it a 'jigger'. The jig is up, Hunters are fine for the bay, but these yachts have no business on the ocean. I delivered a Choy Lee (sic) to Hawaii, a 30 ft 1962 'youall' We put the solar-panel atop the mizzensail, and never flew it. These yachts are made to take it, well balanced too. There are many, many fine used yachts out there, Westsail, Hansy, L. Nelson, etc. I will not get into a pissing contest over million miles of sea-miles etc, but I have delivered many Hunters, and owned one for a year (given to me). I brought one, 34 methinks, up from Cabo some six years ago. I was in the large aft cabin (they are comfortable), and I could see the sun making well-defined shadows of the waves on the hull...
