We're about to head down the Erie Canal and are looking for suggestion as where to step the mast. Suggestions would be welcome!

Geoff - I am in the RCR Skyway Marina (www.rcryachts.com) in Buffalo & they unstepped my mast when I went down the canal. Darren & crew do a fantastic job. Feel free to mention my name.I would be happy to help you if you stop in Buffalo. Help with the mast supports transportation around town etc. Contact me at CDickhut2@aol.com

Chuck,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've heard of them, but was looking for a recommendation from someone who's actually used them.

Yesterday we had the mast stepped at RCR and I must say that they did a great job. I would have no problem recommending them to anyone.

Price range? If I can ask, roughly what do they charge to step a mast? We used Wordell's 2 years ago - he charged $400.

They charged $340 + tax to step a 62' carbon fiber mast. There was a crew of 3 guys + the crane operator. Believe me, we've had the mast stepped several times and this was the best job I've seen. Personally, after seeing Wardell's crane and hearing stories about jobs he's done, I wouldn't use Wardell's.

They let us stay in the pit overnight for free or you could move to the nearby Buffalo docks which are $10 for a 40' boat.

Thanks for the information. Our plan is to go out the Erie Canal after Labor Day and head south. It's nice to know we have a choice. We're still trying to find a DIY yacht club where we might be able to pull the mast. Where are you heading in the Great Lakes?

We're headed to Milwaukee and from there we'll ship the boat via truck to San Diego. From there it's to the Sea of Cortez, Panama, Peru, back to Panama and through the Canal, Western Caribbean and then ?. Details are at
