yanmar transmission fluid

I bought a 1981 h30 in March. When I took possession, I had the dealer mechanic show me how to change oil and check fluids. He told me that the transmission and the engine took the same type of oil, and in fact added some to the transmission. I have the service manual which clearly states using ATF. This dealer is a well respected Hunter dealer, so I am now very confused. Has there been some service change in the last 20 years? Did adding a small amount of 30 wt oil hurt the transmission? Any opinions would be appreciated. Coleman B

Which Yanmar do you have?

I have a 1985 H-31 with a Yanmar 2GM20F, 2 cylinder, fresh water cooled. My transmission uses the same oil as the engine (in my climate, SAE 30), not ATF. Check Torrensen Marine or Mack Boring; they are both Yanmar experts. Be prepared to give them some more detailed specs on your particular engine.

Bob is correct if you have a 2GM20F but....

Coleman:What manual do you have? Yanmar or Hunter? You really want to be sure you have the service manual for your model engine.Assuming that you have the 2GM20F with a KM2P trans. and engine E/=03567 after Aug. 1985 (this is directly out of the Yanmar Service Manual). If you do not have this combo, then you should check with a higher source. First, I'd check with the fellow that serviced the engine, then follow up with the factory or a master distributor like Mack Boring or Torrosen Marine. Be sure that you have the serial number & model from you engine & trans when check out the info.

Don't be confused. Bob's advice is correct no matter what engine you have. Check with Torrenson.

2GM Transmission Oil

My 1981 Hunter 30 has a 2GM raw water colled engine with Hurth transmission and uses 30 wt oil as the manual says. Oh yea, I need to check the level, its been a while. Thanks for the reminder.

2GM SAE30

You did not state what type of engine you have. I have a 82 H30 with a 2GM and it uses SAE30 in the transmission. Same as the engine oil. Got this from a Yanmar service company.
