I have a 1983 H34 with a 3GMF Yanmar. I was told by the surveyor that the temperature gauge wasn't reading accurately when I bought the boat a year ago. I am curious about alternate ways of checking the temperature. Is there any way to use one of those "instant read" kitchen thermometers? If so where should I put it, what is the nominal range? I have a feeling the engine is running hot, but at this stage it is only a feeling. Any ideas? Thanks, Gary

temperature guns

there are"temrerature guns" that will give you temp reading from outside the engine for water temp. Your mechanic should have one or your survey should, maybe you could borrow one to check it rather then but one to use once! Just for conversation what temp do you call "running hot"? You can not use a bulb themoter and get a good reading because you will not have the coolng system under presure from the presure cap (radiator cap) but it would give you a idea if you are realy overheating. Hope this help Good Luck! p.s. temp range is between 160 and 185 normal operating conditions

Wasn't reading accurately!

Gary: Did he happen to tell you if it was high or low? They actually run better hotter but obviously you don't want them to over heat. If you have the Yanmar control panel still hooked up (and it is working) it will notify you if your engine starts to overheat. Even if you have gauges this engine panel should be connected and in proper working order. The gauges are only going to show you trends. If you are busy motoring thru a busy waterway you are not going to be able to view your gauges. The engine panel will sound off BEFORE the engine overheats to warn you that something is wrong.
