Is there polarity to the tach sensor connections ?

It is supposed to be AC volts but I see different color wires so maybe it matters ?

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Is this the Yanmar with the sensor counting teeth on the ring gear? If so, I don' think there is a polarity issue.

Are you asking because the tach isn't working?

Yes, Tach not working.

Too winter up here now to do anything about it but, come spring, I want to have all the details in place to get it done.

so,
Measure AC volts from sensor.
Check wire crimp connections on sensor and replace if needed.

If above is OK, must be tach it's self...

Sound about rite

What Yanmar engine is it? Some of them have tachs driven by the flywheel, some are driven by the alternator. The troubleshooting procedures will be different depending on that.

On our fly wheel driven tach the sensor failed. The sensor should have 1.6 +/- 0.1 Kilo ohms resistance and the output should be 1 vac or higher. The other issue is poor connections.

The service manual for you engine should have instructions on testing the sensor.
