Greetings to all, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience (with a yanmar 18hp...) replacing / repairing the stuffing box 'stuff' while the boat was still in the water! My vessel is sinking (the drip has turned into a faucit) and its to soon to spend the $$$ to yank it out of the water! Any tips, links or stories you could send on procedures would be great.. Reply here or e-mail to mschuck@ups.com

Forum Archives again.

Hi Mary, I tested "Forum Archives", before 7/5/99, with "stuffing box" as the argument, and for all archives. Got almost 300 hits. The first 15 will have what you need. Many have replaced the packing while in the water.

Sinkin' Ship!

Mary: Our local boat yard does this in the water. Usually an hour charge. Steve Dion

Thanks

Thank-you for your speedy replys - I did get some help from the archives. I should be enough for my handy man to stop the water fall! Later on i will probably seek a professional to do the dirty work. Regards, Mary 'Waterloo' Portland (burrr) Oregon

Much ado about nothing

Mary, I really think you are worrying about something which is quite simple ....... once you have had the experience of doing it the first time. I have always packed glands with the boat in the water. Some leak a little more than others but if you have a friend standing by with a small squeeze bulb pump to remove the excess water, it's really quite civilized. The archives are an excellent source of info as to HOW to pack the joint.

Have a pro do it

I had the packing replaced on my 336 by a yanmar service center. They had no problem replacing the packing while the boat was in the water.
