I believe that the rings on my yanmar yse12 are stuck, poor starting; black exhaust. Has anyone got a soloution? I would like to keep it running for the rest of the season and then pull the engine. Have you had success with an additive?

PS (Power Service) diesel additive

Walmart sells an additive called PS that was recommeneded to me by Dareo Diesel Repair. Great stuff, use twice as much as it calls for. It increases cetane 4 points, cleans fuel pump and injectors, eliminates water. I don't know if it frees rings. Are you sure it is the rings? blow-by? compression? Black smoke and hard starting is usually a fuel problem. The PS cured my hard starting 3GM30F.

Whoa!

You must be some mechanic to troubleshoot the problem that narrowly. It may be other things that don't require nearly as much invasive surgery as rings. Go in the Archives and type in "smoke" and "mixing bowl" and "low RPMs" to see some other symptoms -- and solutions. In any event, good move attempting to keep going while the season is still live. Don't give up the ship.

Clogged Injectors

The black smoke is from the fuel. My bet is that your injector nozzles are clogged. The tips can be replaced or you can replace the whole injector. Call your local truck or tractor mechanic.

Product placement?

Frankly, when i first read the note, and the first response, I just assumed it was a product plug. How would one jump to the conclusion that they have a stuck ring? I didn't see it in my diesel engine guide, but then, I guess it happens. I'm guessing htat the ring could stick due to carbon deposits, from fuel or burnt lube oil, no? Every authoritive source I've seen has reccommended against additives - just clean air, clean fuel, and clean oil. jv

Given the age of you engine

Rob; I looked up the model of your engine since it was'nt familiar to me. I found that that engine was in production from about 1977 to 1979. Given the age of the engine and from the symtoms you described, it sounds exactly like what my Yanmar 2QM15 was doing prior to its demise. hard starting, black smoke a lot of the time etc.It sounds as though you have low compression and consequently thats why the hard starting. I don't know the breakdown of that particular engine, but if it has replacable sleeves I would suggest when you break it down that you replace the assy. Pistons, rings, and sleeves, check the rod bearings for wear when you tear it down. I completely rebuilt mine last year for about 500$ in parts which was a lot cheaper than a new engine at 6500$ and that did'nt put it in the boat. One thing I found that will help, is to put a qt of ATF in the tank with about 5 gal of fuel. The high detergent level of the Auto trans fluid will dissolve a certain amount of carbon deposits behind rings and will clean up injectors. Its not a fix though, but will probably get you through the season. Good Luck. Capn jim of Que Pasa?
