Can anyone tell me the orientation of the seals in the water pump? Do the lips face toward or away from each other? Also I need to change the oil in the trans and engine, what type and how much? THe boat is located in New England.

Thanks

Is the water pump belt driven?
I am not sure about yoru specific model yanmar. On the YSM 12 there is only one seal and the side where the spring is exposed is on the same side where the water is.

For the oil, I use shell rotella 15-40 synthetic. If your engine hasn't been running on synthetic from the beginning don't put it in there though. It will start burning oil. The book says 10-20 degrees C-20/20W. 20-35 degrees C- 30 or 40 weight.

Engine oil

You can't go wrong with the Rotella. On an older engine, I use 15W40, with good results. Not sure about the water pump on that motor. I would recommend you get a shop manual for it.

I have the service manual and parts manual to my engine. I was able to rebuild my engine using them. They are very handy and if used properly can make your engine last a long time.
You can drain out all the oil and jsut fill to the dip sticks if you can't find the info otherwise.
The YSM8 engine takes 1.9 liters in the crankcase and the clutch case takes .7 Liters. Also it says to not screw in the clutch case dip stick when checking the oil. That is something I didn't know until just now. Your engine is probably a little different, the manual would really help though.
