yanmar sb 12

Hi Gary;

I installed a 1GM10 Yanmar in '98- and I couldn't have made
a better selection. That engine just runs and runs and uses
very little fuel (about 5 hours on a gallon of diesel).
Installation was very easy; I utilized the existing stern
bearing and 25mm shaft. Everything else is new.

Hi Wilhelm

I agree that teh Yanmar 1GM is an easy fit. The only thing I woud worry about is the salt water cooling and only 9HP. I know it is enough to drive the Vega at a good speed but once you hit big tides, waves and winds then it really shows. In Scotland last year I was proved wrong taht teh Beta BZ482 13.5HP is more tha enough. One of the Vegas had the Beta BD722 20HP which is the three cylinder version and going through Cuan Sound proved what can be done with that extra bit of power. We had five Vegas that day. One had the original Volvo MD6A which managed but could not go against the tide, the Vega I was in had a Yanmar 1GM and that stood no chance, the two with Beta BZ482 managed to go against the tide but not easily the the Vega with teh Beta BD722 showed what could be done with teh extra power.... I know this is not usually needed but it seems that when you really need that extra bit of oomph it seems to be when the going gets tough.... Just my opinionsand nothing to do with me supplying the Betas, I promise.

I launch my Vega next staurday so hopefully I will be able to tell you all how it went, wish me luck.

Hi Steve;

please don't worry- I respect your opinion! Good luck with
your boat launching- wish you happy sailing! By the way-
here in Florida there is now beautiful sailing weather- but
I have 3 broken ribs... not too inducing for going
sailing...

I remember my old Albin 10 hp gasoline engine- did the job
quite well, but I replaced that engine with the Yanmar 1GM,
for one, I liked to have a diesel instead the gasoline
engine.

I once got into a, I might call it 'survival' situation
when I was surprised by a gale with plenty of white water
and waves way to high. With a dribble reefed main, the
storm jib, and my trusted 1GM I made safe harbor after
some nail-biting hours sailing into the wind (running of
the
wind would have been suicide).

No wonder I'm biased......

Sounds as if someone is looking at the SB12 for sale on EBAY.... I saw
it too. I'm far from an expert on the subject, so please by all means
tell me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it the SB12 is an older raw
water cooled engine. Don't think I would go through the trouble to use
such an old engine.

Hi Bob;

nice to know there is another Vega in Florida. I'm in
Miami; my boat is in the upper keys (Key Largo). Right now
I'm not sailing- I've got three broken ribs, but should be
okay in a few weeks. I plan on hauling the boat mid or
end April for a bottom job, should only be for 3 or 4 days,
then I hope to be sailing a lot.
Maybe we can meet some day. I like to sail this year again
up the West coast, Okeechobee- and back at the East coast.

Take care... Wilhelm, V-257

Wilhelm...the sun is shining! We got thru it OK..some roof damange, trees, pool area but all in all pretty good shape. As you may have read or heard, the hurricane hit only 2 miles from the last one...incredeable.

Laughing Gull also survived the latest onslaught..as well as the hard bottom. Tidal surge exceeded last one by about 2 feet. Will send pics.

How did you do?

Best regards

Bob

Hello Bob;

I just came from my boat- she's sitting safe in her slip.
We had no problems here in Miami (my boat is in Key Largo,
that's even more South). The only problem I have- there's
no engine in the boat. After paying about four and a half
thousand dollars for the repair- now the engine is dead-
and I have to get a new one. Tough luck!
I'm happy to know you did okay.. I hope that was the last
hurricane for this year... four are enough!
Take care... Wilhelm... V-257
