Hi All,
I have a 1979 Hunter 30 and I will be attempting to pull the old Yanmar YSM 12 and replace it with a 2QM15. I will have to do this in the water as I have no way to move the boat at the present time from it's slip. Does anyone out there have any past dealings with pulling a motor in the water. If you are familiar with the set up in the engine compartment what is the best way to pull the engine without having to cut the cabinet support legs. Any pitfalls that I should watch out for? My brother that is an auto mechanic and I that has zero mechanical knowledge plan to tackle this with the help of a case of beer.

easy

comes out pretty easy I think i pulled mine in a half hour if I remember correctly.to make life easier take out the bulkhead that separates the engine compartment from the aft berth its easy to remove just a bunch of screws and it will give you a bit more room to work when installing your new engine.if your mast is up you can use your boom to lift the engine with.Mine was down so I had a junk of angle iron and a ratchet hoist to bring her up and out into the cockpit.Taking out the old ysm12 was the easy part replacing it with the volvo with the angle drive transmission was a bit tricker but Im pretty sure your new yanmar is a straight drive that will take less work to cypher out.good luck you must be thrilled to get rid of that 12 I used to think mine was going to come out in the middle of the cabin and do a dance!

Can you move the boat to a place where the yard can help? I was on the hard and used the yard forklift to hoist the old out and the new in. I could have pulled it up to the wall if I had been in the water.

That engine weight is too much for the topping lift. If you use the boom be sure to place a support or two under it. I would put one on both ends to take the weight off the topping lift and off of the gooseneck. Especially putting the 2QM in, a heavy engine.

I welded up a U-shaped bracket so that I could lift from the center of gravity of the engine while clearing the companionway(pic, not me!). That's my 2QM20 coming out. It has a new home in NJ in an H27.

You do NOT use the bom as a lift. Use the MAIN HALYARD. You MAY use the boom to hold the halyard out away from the mast. Just rig up a line from the end of the boom around the halyard where it passes by the boom. This way the halyard itself is taking the great majority of the weight and there is no chance of turning your boom into a pretzel. The halyard and mast can more than handle the weight.

I lifted my Yanmar 4JHE

with the transmission still attached with the main halyard slipped to the boom. The idea is that the boom simply keeps the halyard (and/or whatever goes from the boom to the engine) located.

I didn't pull it out of the companionway but I could've very easily. It weighs WAY more than your YSM or 2QM.

Oh yeah, I did it by myself. No problems.

Mark, how'd the swap go? I have an h30 with a YSE 12 that I'd love to repower but the college bills keep coming. Hey if you are scrapping the old one lunger, would you part with the starter, I think it's the same as mine and my solenoid has been extremely finicky lately.

Yeah I can pull the starter if you would like it. I don't think that it will fit my new motor. I see that you have a YSE 12. Will the YSM 12 fit, not sure if there is much of a difference. I will taking on the swap project mid May. I have to go to the boat tomorrow so I can pull the starter then. Make me an offer and I will be glad to ship it.

Info on Old engine

Was the YSM12 still running? I have a YSM12R that is getting weak. I might be interested in the engine for parts. Can you contact me at toborian@gmail.com to talk.
