Last year several of us with 4JHE's on Cat 42's and Legend 40.5's decided we would adjust the valves and torque the heads on our Yanmars. To make a long story short, after we saw that the valve train had to come off to get some of the head bolts, we passed on doing it ourselves and contented ourselves with checking the valve lash. However, an old-time marine mechanic who I talked to about doing the head torque said he would not recommend it after the head had been retorqued after the engine was run in. He said that in his experience the process caused too much gasket compression and resultant failures. Comment? Fred? Rick D.

Yep, Andy's got it.

Only one re-torque should ever be needed on a new engine and many engines don't need even that. It all depends,,,,,, but it's not needed like a valve adjustment. And on my Yanmar and Toyota truck, (it's history) not even the valve setting changed upon recheck.
