In California I use Boatswain Locker....

I don't believe Torreson's ship out west.

Search the internet

I found the part number of the belt then searched the internet and found belts at my local auto stores that fit the engine and was a much better quality belt and cost a lot less.

John, you'll have to be creative.

Yanmar parts are proprietary. Not much out there except from a dealer. And those dealers are not allowed to compete with each other. Each has a zone and that's the only one (for your area) that you are allowed to buy from. Nasty huh?

parts - not many choices

Yanmar parts you buy from a Yanmar dealer .... That said, belts you can find once you know the size. Take a new or used belt in good shape to an auto parts store. They can probably find you one. Fuel filters on the engine - call Yanmar. Install a primary - Racor or similar. Oil Filters. I haven't tried this, but folks tell me this should be a standard thread pattern. Pressure and temp sensors should be standard. Check the thread size, as they may not be standard US pipe threads. Impellers you are probably stuck with Yanmar, but they aren't that much more expensive than similar Jabsco impellers.... Hoses - mostly standard and available from Goodyear. If you need a 90 degree bend, you can often use a radiator hose - check with auto-parts stores. Check with Yanmar.com for the dealer in your area

Belts

While the Torreson link in the first post is a good source of most Yanmar parts (depending on where you live), I've found that Gates belts (bought at Car Craft and other auto outlets)are far superior to the Mitsubishi belts that Torreson sells and seem to be an OEM product.

I took Fred's comments as a shot at Yanmar.

I too was irritated that I could not order parts from the most convenient (web) site. I had to make a phone call to my nearest dealer (Foley I think) and order from them. They were apparently not well versed in the generally available kits and assembled what I needed item-by-item. Took a couple of calls to get it straightened out and received them without too much of a wait. Too bad Yanmar has this territorial policy. At least I'm not in the market for a Toyota. Around here, you have to go through Southeast Toyota and they mark up the price even to the dealers. It really gripes me that I would have to pay a 3-5 hundred more just because I'm in this area of the US. Rant Off . . . Clear Skies; Balmy Days and Smooth Winds to all.

Stop It!

I took Fred's comment for just what it was. A JOKE. People -- GIVE IT A REST!!!!! Now to the Yanmar parts. Note that I worked for Mack Boring during the 70's. Belts: belts are belts, except that the Japanese use a different v angle. If it's wrong they'll wear much quicker. There are a few dealers on Forked River who can sell Yanmar and parts within about half a mile. When I was there Mack didn't care who sold it as long as they sold it. I get Yanmar oil filters from the most active dealer in my area and pay $7.95 for an oil filter. The NAPA store in town sella a filter with the same stampings, leading me to firmly believe they are made by the same company that supplies them to Yanmar. Price? $9.95. Great bargain. O.E. primary fuel filter? don't remember price but I don't remember being astounded by high price. A large 2 micron Racor is probably more than adequate, at about $20.00 per cartridge. Replacement raw water pump assembly - $406.00. That to me is plenty pricy. And with the wrong bracket to boot! If I had time and patience I could probably make something up from a Jabsco or something. Probably not worth the effort. Exhaust elbow/riser. $177.00 Steep? I think so, but it's a boat. As far as I know, Mack and Toreson will both ship anywhere, but I won't swear to that. And John from Portland? Buy yourself the factory parts book. Preferably at your local Yanmar dealer. Maybe if you get yourself known there they won't look at you funny when you come in for advice.

Torreson has limited shipping area

Fred and tks are correct, Torreson won't ship out West. Yanmar restricts dealerships geographically, which means you will have to find someone nearby. Which is a shame, because Torreson easily has the best e-commerce site for Yanmar parts that I have found. Fortunately, I have a choice of dealers fairly close where I am at, but I think the policy stinks anyway and it's got to be even worse if you don't live near one--it would be more convenient to shop on-line and have the stuff shipped from Michigan than to have to drive a few hours to the nearest dealer. As far as dealing with Yanmar directly, forget about it. They don't speak English and don't answer calls/e-mails. It's a good thing their engines are reasonably reliable, because their customer service sucks. But hopefully your local dealership is a little more on the ball.

Thanks to all who replied

We actually have an excellent Yanmar supplier right here in Portland. However, trying to pinch boat dollars, I was hopping to find sustitues as I had with my previous Universal - this doesn't appear to be the case (with exception of possibly a remote oil filter. So, my trusty Yanmar dealer will get my business. I have found, with my '06 Hunter 38(which I love), that the designers out did themselves in mounting the 2nd fuel filter and engine oil filter in difficult to reach locations. I've moved my RACOR for convenience and will probably do the same with the engine oil filter as one of the previous threads recommended, Again, thanks for the feedback (and humor).

follow up.

It's a snowy day here in Portland which isn't appealing to my kind of sailing, but at the same time it's also not the kind of day to go to work so I played hooky and did some more investigating. Cook Engine is our local Yanmar Distributer and top notch for service or parts, but I still wanted cross reference parts so I'd never be in a jam. I bought the Yanmar parts I needed and then visited some auto shops to get some potential alternates. A Yanmar V-belt substitute is a Prestone 17435. A possible Oil Filter substitute is a Purolator L14612 and the Yanmar impeller substitute is a Johnson 09-1027B.

Clark, you have the wrong read on Fred. He always thinks outside the box and is very well respected here. Ask him to show you his bizness card. It says... Expert Cheers Rick

Umm, I think a couple of posts were removed.

As they were a little testy. I did take Fred's latter comments as a joke and agreed with his comments about Yanmar's policies. Clear Skies, Steady Winds and Calm Seas to All.
