I've experienced that calling around to various suppliers in your region can yield different price results depending on how long they have had the part in inventory. Can be well worth doing if its not a routine part; particulary if for an older model. If the dealer needs get the part from Yanmar's main warehouse (Chicago I believe), then all will quote more or less about the same.

If you live in the East or Midwest, try Torresen Marine. I've used them for my Westerbeke parts, and they have been good. Not necessarily inexpensive...but it's a Westerbeke. Not sure on Yanmar pts.
I've used both Torresen (Marine Diesel Direct) and my local Washington, DC and Annapolis Yanmar dealers. I found that Torresen was a reliable online/mailorder outlet and that their prices were just about exactly the same as the local Yanmar parts dealers. If you need the names/addresses for metro Washington, DC/Annapolis dealers, let me know.
The only way to beat marine prices is to check Tractor Supply as they have a lot of Yamar diesel parts for tractors.
Yup, they're turkeys about this and it sometimes puts one at the mercy of sole importers and dealers... We've developed relationships with an ex-Yanmar dealer in New Zealand and recently with a dealer in the Bay area and they have been willing to mail us stuff when needed... For Yanmar branded parts that means paying retail plus shipping and import taxes... IME, Yanmar dealers are a varied lot some are very helpful and competent and some are neither. Yanmar protects them but doesn't seem to do any QA work at all.
For consumables (filters, impellers and the like) we never buy Yanmar branded bits.

When you make the best product you can command your own way. To their credit though, this allows them to be valued by their own distributors. It does no good for a company to sell the products through any willing salesman (or woman). They end up just killing each other and the mothership. I've found LaBorde product to be easy to work with, willing to ship (I'm in there territory), and the prices were not that bad. Although I am frugal, I'm a believer in "name brand" products for some things- including filters.
