My Yanmar 2GMF is leaking oil onto the bilge diaper, its not much, but its there and I don't like that. I have discussed this with my Yanmar dealer and he thinks it is the gasket for the gear box. I asked if I could replace the gasket without taking the entire engine out, but he was not familar with the working room on a Hunter 31 1984. Has anyone out there done this. I would appreciate any input. Guy

Yanmar Oil Leak Possibilities

Look closely at the location of the oil marks on the diaper to get a better idea of where the leak is coming from. Then feel around the engine with your fingers to see what is wet. I had a leak a few years ago and it was the diaphram where the fuel lift pump manual lever is. That's the lever to bleed air out of the fuel line. The other side of the diaphram has engine oil behind it.

Same leak

For some time I have had an enoying little oil leak from the Yanmar in my 34 which I finally traced at the weekend to the diaphram in the lift pump - exactly the same as the leak on Dicks boat. Good place to start looking I guess.

The same Oil leak

I have a Yanmar 2GMF with a little oil leak as well. Guess where it is coming from? - From the daiphram/gasket where the manual fuel pump is. I am going to fix it just as soon as it gets above the freezing mark. I will try to make my own gasket out of oil resistant rubber - I will see if it works. It worked in the past when I was rebuilding and old motorcycle engine, may be it will work this time as well.

same here

Look below the fuel pump to see if there is a black streak down the side of the engine. If there is, then the pump is leaking. I just replaced mine. I think I paid around $70. If you are going thru the work of trying to cobb something together, I suggest doing it right. The engine is getting along in years, about the time you patch it, it will break. The patch job could ruin a nice cruise or worse.

I had to replace my gear case gasket

and it wasnt much fun. If you find out this is the problem, you'll need to pull off the flywheel, alternator, and all belts, etc from the front of the engine. You will have to remove the hard fuel lines from the fuel pump to the injectors. Make sure you close the raw water intake prior to bleeding and cranking because it can take a while to get the fuel through. Look closely at the rotation of the flywheel prior to pulling it and make sure you dont turn the rod with the case cover off (especially not backwards!!!) as you run the risk of throwing off the timing. It really wasnt too big of a job especially considering that I am no mechanic. If you are going to do it, spring for the expensive shop manual and follow the instructions as best you can. I would replace every gasket in between while you have it apart.

Gear Box Removal

Thanks Robin you gave me the info I was looking for, I have a Yanmar service manual which shows the steps to dis-assemble and re-assemble the engine, I'm glad someone else out there has had the same problem, otherwise the engine runs great. Guy
