All, I am looking for a hand starting crank for a Yanmar YSM series engine. My boat did not come with it when I bought it and I'd like to have the capability to start it if I run the batteries down. Thanks in advance. Dave 'SlipAway' O'day 27

Yanmar Starting Crank

As an FYI, the Yanmar Diesel engine is not easily started by the handcrank. We have never had success hand starting the engine. Your best bet is to carry an emergency starting battery or a multifunction jumping battery, air compressor, flashing light, work light, etc sold under the Senco name

It is a two man operation

It is dangrous too if you don't know what your doing. The key is the correct use of the decompression lever. Have the less brave person hold the decompression lever "down" and then the more brave person cranks (in the right direction with the ign on) the engine. Once the more brave person has gotten the engine "up to speed" he/she pulls the hand crank out. The less brave person, upon seeing that the hand crank is not in the engine releases the decompression lever. Repeat as needed or possable. Now if the more brave person still has the hand crank engaged when the less brave person releases the decompression lever one of two things will happen. 1. The engine will fire up and the hand crank and attached hands and arms will get a really good jolt as they go flying off the engine. 2. The engine will stop dead and the attached hands and arms will stop with it resulting in "that stinging sensation" that we manual engine starters love so much. To answer your question. They don't make them. You have to build your own. I've seen cranks, springs, ratchets, straps, all kind of Rube Goldburg stuff. It all works, some better than others. Before you go off an get busy do your homework. Can you even get access to the front of the engine to crank it. Is there enough room "at the bottom of the crank cycle" to allow you to even do it. If not go for a strap. I personnaly don't like them as the end tends to beat the snot out of the stuff opposite the engine. I even saw a guy put a lawn mower pullstart on. Made the engine look kinda childish.

Ok, Thanks, I think

Thank you all for your input so far, but I am just asking if anyone has one of these for a YSM that they want to get rid of. If these engines are in good working order they are easy to start with the hand crank, I started both YSM8 and 12 with no problems. The YSM engine, both the YSM8 and the YSM12 is actually very easy to start with the hand crank as it is a singel cylinder engine. The trick is to get it spinning as fast as you can and once the decompression lever is released, FOLLOW THROUGH the compression strokes, keep cranking as hard as you can till it starts. The hand crank shaft is on a rachet system so if it starts the shaft will free wheel as to not hurt you at all. That is why you can grab that shaft when it is running, it is spinning slowly or not at all because it is free wheeling. If you don't follow through when the decomp lever is released nothing is going to happen. It will just stop from the compression. The shear weight of the flywheel will help you pull the engine through the cycles. So, Since these engines came with a hand crank that work very well, and since mine is missing: Does anyone have one that they want to get rid of? or still have one left over from when they re-powered? I'll buy it off ya. Thanks again, Dave
