I have an 2003 356 with a Yanmar 3gm30f-yeu. Can anyone find what the secondary fuel filter (the one on the engine) micron rating is? I can only come up with 10 to 15 and only found that once. It seems a bit large, I was thinking it was a 2 or 3 micron. I am changing my filters and assumed the best set up was a 10 micron for the primary and a 2 micron forthe secondary. I cannot find a choice of micron sizes for the secondary and if it is 10-15 then I think the primary should be a 20. Thanks-

Mike...

this is going to trigger a whole lot of responses!

Two schools of thought: 1. Use a 10 mic Racor and a 2 mic Yanmar filter; 2. Use a 2 mic Racor and a larger one on the Yanmar.

Depending on your filter source, the Yanmar one could be anywhere between 2 and 10 microns if unspecified on the packaging. Yanmar spec is the 10 to 15 you cited.

I use a NAPA filter (for the Mazda engine equivalent) on my Yanmar 3GM30F that's supposed to be 10 mics. I use a 2 mic Racor ahead of it as had the two previous owners. With a vacuum gage, I'd rather have the Racor clog first and change it than try to change a hot engine one.

The secret is to keep your fuel tank scrupulously clean.

I agree with Dan. For the last 3 boats, I have used racor 500fg filters with the vacuum gauge, 2 micron racor cartriges. I check vacuum every couple of hours change when needle moves up before filter clogs. I learned this lesson the hard way when my hi pressure injector pump had to be rebuilt at great cost and long delay. I have always used factory secondary filter cartriges, but only change them occasionally. I count on the racor.
