I think I found data on the engine. I think it is original to the boat, but has a high output alternator. Basically I was trying to find a method for changing the raw water impeller without removing the starter.3JH32C

Can you take a picture of the engine id plate located on top ?

Is it a 3jh2 ?

Yes it is. The reason for asking was to find out if there was a secret to removing the impeller without removing the starter. I don’t have the tool shown in the vid above.

I just remove the engine mount bracket and water pump on my 3jh3 when I need to replace the impeller. Off, replace, install all done in under an hour. No need to change the engine mount height.

Thanks to all that responded! With your assistance and knowledge gleaned from the internet I think we will have it well in hand. Again many thanks!

I have a 3jh2e. The sea water pump was not one of Yanmar's better ideas. In theory there is enough room between the water pump and the starter for the impeller to fit between the two and in fact it does. The problem is getting enough leverage to pull the old impeller out. I've tried a couple of times and decided it was easier to drop the starter as it is only 2 bolts and some wiring. Be sure to disconnect power to the starter!

The other half of the solution was changing to a Globe impeller. These have more vanes that are thinner and more flexible. After 700 hours the impeller is still doing its job.

An impeller puller make this job so much easier - worth the $40 - or buy an M18x1.5 oil drain plug for $5, chuck it in a lathe and run a 1/4" threaded hole through it and use a 2" fully threaded 1/4" bolt to draw the impeller out. Even easier if you have an access hatch to get at the waterpump - piece of cake! :).

I have no problem changing the impeller on my 94 Legend 37.5 with 3JH2E engine. I use the open end wrench from Yanmar kit that came with boat to remove bolts. Use small needle nose pliers to pull impeller. It is tight but comes out with no need to remove starter. I have done it a dozen times…
