I have a new to me 1989 Hunter 30 with a 18 hp Yanmar engine.

Can anyone explain why the engine stop knob is located inside the boat on top of the engine cover?

I am trying understand the reasoning behind having to go below to stop the engine instead of having it on the engine panel in the cockpit.

Easier to install, maintain and replace when necessary. Having gone through the painful effort of replacing a long cable running a circuitous route to the pedestal, making it easy to use isn't always a top priority.

i put a trombetta stop solenoid on mine with a push button and did away with the cable...i like it a lot better than the cable and in the event of battery failure you can still raise the motor cover and do it by hand if need be

We moved ours below on our H31. It prevented the instrument panel from damage and is a good theft determent if left in the stop position.

ok its a Trombetta model# P610-B5V12

and here are some pics...

i had to make a connecting wire link out of some 3/32 ss welding rod and bend it from the plunger to the fuel shut off lever and wire the system in to my electrical system going back to the engine panel ...the with wire is 10 ga....the red and black wire are 16ga...the red is live when you turn on the ignition switch...the white wire is hot only when you hit the stop button..and the black wire is a ground wire.....it works great

The stop engine cable when routed to the control panel in the cockpit is exposed to the elements and it is just a matter of time before it rusts, freezes and needs to be replaced. Some have gotten tired of having to replace the cable and have opted to relocate it to the protective confines of the cabin. Perhaps availability of a suitable cable or cost may have motivated some as a shorter universal cable is usually much easier to find. For other having to contort themselves in the belly of the boat to replace the cable it may have lost its appeal. Some that have relocated it seem to insist there is another benefit in which by leaving the fuel shut off activated inside a locked cabin it would make it harder for someone to hot wire the boat. I have busted a cable here and there and have had to shut the engine manually until a replacement is secured and really do not consider it any significant inconvenience to walk a couple of steps and pull a stop cable located near the companionway. That is one of the reasons I like about sailing is that each one does what works better for them.

This design feature is brought to you by the same "engineers" who put the raw water pump in facing aft....

I was reading another thread, and someone there suggested a cruzpro temp gauge. Go to www.cruzpro.com. i think you will like what you see. Seems very simple.

I ran my cable concealed inside close to the bottom wash board inside so it was not exposed to weather. This way if your waiting for engine to cool down and are below or in the cockpit you can shut it off. Good for both worlds.

I like having mine inside. It is easy to reach when I need to quickly shut down the engine during winterization and the engine has just emptied my antifreeze bucket.

Sorry about leaving out the rest of the info. I tied a cord to the knob, ran it throu a block and took the cord out into the cockpit.this way anyone cap pull the cord when I need to stop the engine.

Sorry for thread hijack and for necro-posting, but serious noob question about the 88-94 H30.. the knob below the throttle control on the pedistal.. what is that for?
