My engine is a 3GM Yanmar and I would like to install a permanent fitting with hose in the oil sump plug. It seems that Yanmar is not recommending this method, instead they recommend changing oil through the dip stick. Does anybody know if this is true and why? Thanks.

Hope it isn't

I hope it isn't true, because that's what I have on my 3GM30. It makes oil changes a cinch. We have the hose plumped to a pump mounted to a hand pump on the engine room wall. Just put the spout in a container and 30 seconds of pumping and I'm all done with removing the old oil. Engine is a 1991 with 1000 hours.

Sump Drain

I installed a srain in the sump of my 3GM30F also. Pipe thread into the cast boss in the sump. I use a ball valve and hose enabling me to completely drain off the old oil. As long as it's secure how could it possibly be a problem?

The ball valve that Sam has wisely installed would prevent oil from draining should the hose somehow be cut. Otherwise, it would be good to use hose with steel reinforcement, as I have seen on some gensets. Sam, what size pipe thread was required in the sump? I am also trying to find the thread size of the Kingston cock on my 3GM30 FW saildrive so I can replace it with a three-way ball valve, and a source for such a valve(metric, I assume). Then it would be easy to fresh water flush the heat exchanger, and to winterise. Has anyone done this?
