Any input on an inline fuel pump just downstream of the fuel tank and before the water/fuel separator as an aid in priming the fuel system after a filter change? I have a good idea of how to do this but I am wondering if anyone uses this system regularly or any tips on installation etc. I have a Hunter33 with the Yanmar 2QM15.

Racor with Primer Pump

I just installed a Racor with a primer pump built into it. This will allow me to prime the fuel lines after I change the filter and not have to worry about the pump on the Yanmar, which is pretty weak, to care of bleeding the system. Read some of the archives about putting electric fuel pumps on but felt that this was the easiest way and not have to worry about a pump running while the engine is on.

Installed a OB Squeeze Bulb ..................

......... upstream of the fuel strainer on an Atomic engine as the fuel tank was at the lowest part of the system. Works like a charm for priming the system after a filter change. Regards, s/v Island Hunter

I allso installed a

outboard motor type bulb pump right after the tank and it has worked like a charm!

Bulb

As others responding, I installed a small bulb in the fuel line to aid bleeding air from the fuel system. I did this many years ago (around 8) and have had absolutely no problems associated with the installation. Bleeding became quick and easy.

I had a problem with a fuel bulb!

I installed an OB-type fuel bulb on my 1980 Hunter 30 some years ago. It worked like a charm to fill and prime the diesel system when changing filters. Last year I had a problem with the engine loosing power and then quitting abruptly and at random. After much trouble shooting, I found, quite by accident, that the valving mechanism in one end of the bulb had come apart. The parts were floating around inside the bulb and occasionally partially restrict or sometimes totally block the flow of fuel. With the engine stopped, the parts would float free and the engine would run, normally again for a while. I did install a new bulb, but I watch for signs of the problem returning. The first indication was that the bulb would not work properly when squeezed.

Installed Electric Fuel Pump

I did install an electric fuel pump from where else? PEP BOYS! (Bet you thought I was going to say Home Depot!) The low pressure, under 2 1/2 pounds, pump is preferred. A small in-line strainer, the see through type is installed before the pump to keep the big chunks out. The pump in turn feeds the Racor filter. That silly little pump on the Racor is too much effort to use, but is OK in an emergency. The wiring to the pump goes through a switch to allow me to run it off the engines electrical switch or direct, with the engine switched off. This way I can prime with the engine off and not have to listen to the warning horn. Those squeeze bulbs tend to be cheaply made and harden quickly, as we've heard, and flipping a switch is ever so much more elegant!

Thank you for the help

Thank you all for the input. I ended up going with a Racor pump unit. At first I was not sure if it would provide enough pressure however my water separator is mounted a little below my tank so I have a bit of head pressure once the fuel gets started. After installation I filled the bowl and pumped the unit clear of air and she started right up. I will post some pictures next week.
