i am interested in purchasing a hunter 270 with a 9 h.p. yanmar diesel. my concern is winterizing the engine. is is a closed cooling unit that will allow me to put antifreeze in it or it is cooled from the lake water.

A Hunter 270? 9 hp?

Was that a special model in the late 70's, early 80's? You should probably post this question for Torreson, in the "Diesel" forum. But he'll want to know the year and model # I think. If it is a late 70's Yanmar it is probably seawater cooled(no heat exchanger). My own 1979 2QM20 has a heat exchanger but I am certain it was an upgrade. It is fairly easy to discern from looking at the motor. There will ususally be an external waterpump, belt-driven, with the hose going to the raw water strainer. The internal waterpump circulates the water/anti-freeze mix in the closed system.

Hunter 27?

I have a 1990 Hunter 27 (for Sale) and it is cooled with lake water. to the best of my knowledge Hunter does not presently manufacture a 27 with a diesel. My 27 has a yanmar diesel and winterizing is a piece of cake. remove intake hose at filter, place in antifreeze and allow it to suck until pink is present at exhaust. then have another beer.

Closed System

I just traded my 270 for a larger 340 after two years. The Yanmar is a closed system, so you should have no problem winterizing. By the way, it's a sweet little engine - never had a problem with it. A nice feature is that you can even crank it by hand if your battery dies (you have to order the crank handle separately from Yanmar). Although I never had to use this feature (thank goodness!), it gave me nice peace of mind. I really liked the boat. Easy to singlehand, which is what I did most of the time. Enjoy! Dave
