I recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 31 with a Yanmar Diesel, Model # 2GMF. The boat did not come with an owner's manuel for this engine. I am desperately in need of one. Does anyone know where I can get a manual? More urgently, though I have extensively examined the engine I can't find a dip stick to check the oil. Does anyone know where the dip stick is on this darn engine? Help is appreciated.

Have the same boat - it came with all manuals, etc. The manuals were pretty skimpy but I will be glad to copy the engine manual - given there was one. Right now I don't recall but I will check this weekend. As for the dipstick, it should be on the starboard side of the boat. There is an access panel under the galley sink, the stick is in there, down low on the side of the engine. You can also reach it through the main access panel in front of the engine. Truthfully it requires jiggling betweent the two locations. Also, I purchased a real good owners/maintenance manual through Chilton's (the folks that write all of these manuals.) They are on the web, try www.chilton.com, but I know they were purchased last year. As I recall, Amazon.com also had the book. It's very good for a do it yourselfer. Good luck.

Yanmar Manuals

I purchased an Owners manual and a Shop Manual direct from Yanmar. These are very helpful. Try a Yanmar distrubitor in your area or search for web site. Good Luck, RB

To add...

...to what Don said about the dipstick access. If you flip up the first companion step and reach with your right arm down the starboard side of the engine (requires it's cool) you can reach the dipstick relatively easy. Getting it back in is a bit more of a challenge until you get used to it. This way no panels have to be moved.

My First Response!!

Hey for me it was where is that darn drain plug (there isnt one!!) After studying both the Yanmar manual and the CHilton manual described, I found the Chilton manual at about $45 to be the best one for an average (ok below average) mechanic like myself. You can pretty much work yourself through almost all maintenance with that manual. Congratulations on a great boat!

Mack Boring also sells all of the Yanmar manuals including a parts manual that shows every subassembly exploded. Mack Boring's Engine City Tech Yanmar class is excellent. I just attended in February and highly recommend it.

Sealoc

I had to get a manual too. Bought the Yanmar manual, then found and bought the Sealoc manual for Yanmars, which covers all the marine engines. (which you can get at BoatUS or Amazon.com. Unless you are an expert mechanic, I think you'll find the Sealoc manual much easier to follow and understand. Recommended.
