Yanmar Diesel hours

I am new to this site so any advice or opinions are welcome. I am in the process of purchasing a used 2000 Hunter 310. I am going to have a survey done prior to final purchase. My concern is that the Yanmar diesel has 1600 hour on the clock. Seems like a lot for a boat this young. The boat is being purchased from the original owner and overall is in very good condition. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

could be an ex-charter boat, but that is only a bit over a hundred hours a year. Easily rack those hours up as a liveaboard or actively used.

The yanmar should be good for that many more, as long as maintenance has been done.

You may ask the seller/broker what the story is, they usually have some insight in to details.

These engines are rated for 10-12,000 hrs. The real story is how was that engine maintained during its lifetime.

While I also agree that an average of 100+ hrs per year is pretty minimal, you can tell a lot about an engine just by looking at it. A nice clean engine and engine compartment usually means the owner cared enough to do required maintenance. Rusty, dirty, and wet or oily engines are warning signs, usually meaning there are other things amiss with the boat. Also, an original owner who took care of his/her boat/engine should be delighted to share maintenance logs and records with you.

I have about 1650 hr on my 1999 Yanmar 3JH3E; so yeah, about 100 hr/yr. That's at least 10 oil changes, at least 6 oil filter changes, 2 or 3 valve adjustments, 3 impeller changes, and probably two flushes of the coolant. If all that's been done and the thing has never overheated seriously, then it should be good to go, according to the experts!

I repowered with a Yanmar 3YM20 in Oct of '08. Use fairly frequently, at least once a week, and have 460something hours on it. That's about 60 -70 hours a year. 1600 on your engine is not alot at all if, as mentioned above, it has been maintained. As an aside, not to hijack this thread, I have found through research and others that the hour meter on the YM series has a manufacturing flaw that doesn't allow the meter to display all the time. Mine will sometimes come on for a few seconds when first started than fade out. Sometimes I am lucky enough to catch it and record the hours. However, it does keep track of the hours. -Roland

That is about 9 hours a month. Here in Florida boats are used year round and in your area the Intra-Coastal is an attractive destination which requires engine use. Check any maintenance records the owner may provide and do a visual inspection checking for leaks and rust. Take a look at the air filter, not that it is important, as its condition may reflect on maintenance practices. Start the engine from cold and take notice on how quick it may start and whether you see any smoke. Let it warm up and run it through engaging the prop and check for vibrations and tapping noises. Like others have said maintenance is key in the life of these engines.

I have approx. 1900 hrs. on our 1999 2GM20F and we only get to sail about eight months out of the year. Obviously we don't get a lot of wind around here. Yours is right in line with what I would expect IF the hour meter hasn't packed it in at some previous time. Ours did several years back and I replaced the tachometer.

As others have said here, go over the engine with a fine toothed comb as an indication of the maintenance its received. If the owner can produce maintenance records, so much better.

Your big worry here is that the boat wasn't in charter at any time.

Ours is a 1986 boat, with 2880 engine hours. 100+ per year is NORMAL. There's the old saying that a little used diesel may not be in as good condition as one that's been run. As long as maintenance has been performed, should be just fine. Good luck.

Probably depends on where the boat is but I have a 1994 with 2900 hours. When I got it in 1999, it had about 750 hours. So, that's about 145 hours a year which in our neck of the woods, is about right. That's probably a quarter or less spent on engine life. No worries.

I once asked a guy who was running Yanmar 3GM30F's in a fleet of shoreboats "How many hours can you get from one of those engines in hard service like that?"
He said "I don't know, we just replace them every 10,000 hrs whether they need it or not"

I have a 2003 3GM30F, 12 years, 1235 hours. 9 oil changes, 7 impeller changes, new injectors and valve adjustment. Went cruising to Fl from Kentucky Lake to Punta Gorda and back in 2013/14. Put 472 hours on it on that cruise. I think the hours sound reasonable. Ask about the maintenance done. I need a coolant change and plan on doing that this spring. I also have a leaking water pump and am going to change it this spring too. Other than that, no other issues.

Pump

I rebuilt my pump about a years ago and the seal was bad but changed
the bearings also when I tooked it apart and rebuilt in my garage with a vise.
But maybe next time if thinking of new also get the rebuild kit and keep the rebuild as backup and I got all parts from Yanmar dealer.
I think I still have rebuild info on boat if you want.
