Is there a "norm" for hour life expectancy for a Yanmar diesel engine? I show 3518 hrs on a 1984 3gmf.

The number I've heard

is that they shouild run for at least 10,000 hours without a major overhaul if well maintained with routine maintence.

Re: The number I've heard

According to a Mack Boring rep who gave us a course on diesel maintenance, 20,000 hours. For my boat that's probably something like 40 years.

RE: Yanmar life expectancy

I ran a 1978 raw water cooled Yanmar YSB8 for 15 years of active cruising without any kind of failure. I changed the oil and filters on a regular basis, performed basic lubrication, impeller changes, and flushed the cooling system with fresh water before winter layup. That was it! Never had a service call. Never had a no-start. These are terrific engines!
