I have a Southern Cross 28 and 8500 pounds. I also have a real problem getting a 20 into the available space. Anyone have experience driving this size boat with a 16HP diesel?

We just repowered a Mirage 35 with a Beta 20. It's a 10 000 lb displacement and the Beta 20 pushes it along at 6.7 kts at max continuous RPM.

My O’Day 322 displaces 10,250 pounds and has a Yanmar 2GM20F…which generates 16HP at 3400 RPM’s (18HP @3600).

I put a Yanmar 2YM15 in my Starwind 27 that weighed 5700 pounds. It was an excellent choice for the boat but I did have to bump out the compartment 2 inches forward. At least it fit nicely on the stringers without modification.

On your Southern Cross, I'll suggest that this engine will be ok, but if you have any concern that you won't be satisfied, I would look closely at the compartment modification that may be necessary to fit the larger engine. Heck, I had to modify the engine box on my current boat simply to accommodate the serpentine pulleys that I exchanged for the originals.

My Hunter 30 displacement is 9,700 lbs and it has a Yanmar 2GM that’s rated 13HP at 3,400 rpm. I like to run it at around 2800 rpm and at that engine speed it will move the boat at 6 knots in waves 2 ft or less. Into a 25 knot head wind and three to four waves, it’s going to do around 4 knots. For my purposes, really just fair weather day sailing, it’s fine. If I was cruising in all weather, I might want more power. 16HP is probably adequate for your 8,500 lb boat.

Quote from a 2018 Sailing Magazine review:

Southern Cross 28
"Engine
The 14-horsepower M18 Universal diesel engine was commonly installed during production. Owners mostly agreed the horsepower was adequate to push the boat in a heavy sea."

sailboatdata.com shows:
Auxiliary Power
Make:Universal
Type:Diesel
HP:11

So from those two data points it sounds like 16 HP should be fine.

My O'Day 31 that displaces 10,100 pounds has the 14 HP Universal M-18 and it does okay. Not over powered but fully adequate.

What do you have now?
